What's the best top down army shooter?

Post by The Laird » Tue Dec 29, 2015 6:29 pm

Inspired by Outdated Gamer's poll that (wrongly in my opinion) included several of these games. Which one was your favourite and why?

Gun.Smoke for me, the NES version. Great soundtrack and nice difficulty. Guerilla War is also very good, I prefer the NES version too. I also used to play quite some Front Line, but it's not terribly good, although I respect it since it's the originator of the genre. Ikari Warriors never resonated with me but I have not tried the Arcade versions. Commando is probably the game that popularized these kind of shooters and the formula was expanded upon by various copy cats that followed.

edit: Shock Troopers is good and flashy also. Kind of what Metal Slug is for the sidescrolling platform shooter and I think the old Rambo games and Total Carnage deserve a mention too.

Arcade Gunsmoke for me. Not seen a decent home conversion TBH...

Don't really like Wild West stuff, but the music, atmosphere and visuals, together with the sublime 3-angle shooting mechanism, meant it was my favourite overhead shooter back in the arcades (and not a push-scroller like most of the others).

Still play it regularly on MAME :D

This is more like it, a proper poll !

Love top down shooters this, so many favourites from that list. Commando to me was the original which i love, Ikari Warriors a classic 'upgrade', Mercs the same. But it has to be the original for me, Commando. Remember playing that over and over in an arcade in Torremolinos in 1987 !

Played it last week at arcade club, difficult as anything ! Can rarely get past level 2 in the arcade, embarassing. Has a proper old skool scoring system as well, you're halfway through level 1 and your scores 8700 or something, none of this 100 billion million points for picking up a box of grenades mularky !

Jackal.
Away from the army stuff it would be Total Carnage or Out Zone.

Assault Heroes nailed the old vibe on 360.
If it's slower than me, dumber than me and it tastes good ... tough titty.

When I read the thread title, I instantly thought of S.W.I.V on the ST.
Thoughts and prayers.

No Cannon Fodder?

Blasphemy!!!

Out of that list I'd have to go with Ikari Warriors, but I still fire up Cannon Fodder on DOSBox (I have the retail "Sold Out Software" CD-ROM version) and the SNES game regularly enough.

Note that I don't claim to be actually any good at it - I just love playing it.

Cannon Fodder is more of a strategy game, doesn't really play anything like these other games, that's why it's not here :P

Mercs. A classic from Capcom. I loved it in the arcade. Playing 2 players helps(I would have loved to have played it with 3 players, but the arcade cab that I played it on could only do 2). I loved the use of the vehicles(the jeep, etc.) in it. The end-of-level baddies are interesting as well. Yeah, it's tough - but addictive.

I played the Amiga conversion, it's not bad - seems a bit faded in its colours compared to the arcade version. I must try and get the Capcom Classics Collection, to see what the version on that is like.

Another vote for Mercs. Another one I used to own on Mega Drive and now miss...
