Space Harrier on the Spectrum must be close. It's so fast that even the PC Engine version which I've been playing is slower, plus it doesn't have the checkerboard floor. The Spectrum sprites seem to be of a higher resolution too. It's an absolutely incredible conversion.

If it's the Master System games, my favourites are:

Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars
Bubble Bobble
Choplifter
Double Dragon
Fantasy Zone
Hang-On
Operation Wolf
Quartet
R-Type
Rastan
Shinobi
Space Harrier
Wonderboy in Monster Land

Operation Wolf on the Amstrad CPC. In fact, I thought it was better than the arcade version. Those who think I am having a laugh or anti-CPC do not know good taste where they see it.

The Master System had some excellent arcade conversions and made other 8-bit version look absolutely horrible. Bubble Bobble is a perfect example. The C64 version, while a good game by itself, is a pretty bad conversion of the arcade.

R-Type and Bubble Bobble on MS would be my picks.

Here's my list :D

Best Arcade to 8-bit conversions (inc. platform)
Bomb Jack - numerous versions: CPC, Speccy & C16 (I love the C16 version)
Gauntlet (& Gauntlet II) - SMS, CPC (the only really bloody good, jaw dropping versions)
Hang-On - SMS (nearlly arcade-perfect, shame the original games wasn't as good as Super Hang-On)
Outrun - SMS (although Outrun converted very poorly to almost all systems, the SMS was a fairly good version)
Space Harrier - Speccy, SMS, CPC (it's all good)
Slap Fight - CPC & Speccy
Legend of Kage - CPC & Speccy
Arkanoid - CPC (quality!)
Rainbow Islands - SMS, CPC, C64 (all good versions - I'm not fond of the Speccy - the colour issues make it hard to see the characters)
R-Type - Speccy (my favourite)
Bubble Bobble - CPC, C64, Speccy

... I've mentioned platforms for these game - these are the platforms I think the game was good on. If it was on a platform, but I ain't listed it, it's cos I don't think that version is a good conversion. There'll be no mention of NES cos I don't own one and have never played any arcade conversions on one!!!
