I voted other, for me it's either MK: Double Dash or Mario Kart Wii

Crash Team Racing is the only answer here! Great circuits, great selection of characters and lots of sneaky shortcuts etc. What a way for Naughty Dog to sign off on the Crash franchise. Couldn't get enough of this back in the day, especially in multiplayer.

My other close favourites would be Mario Kart DS, Mario Kart 8, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed and Konami Krazy Racers.

Does Power Drift count as a kart racer?

I guess it could, although it was released prior to SMK and the whole "cartoony karting" craze it triggered.

Everything about it is terrific, and I still love its mode 7 graphics to this day. 2 player split screen is also superb, as its the same experience as one player (as that is split screen in effect anyway), so it doesn't feel like a compromise splitting the screen.
My thoughts exactly.

I haven't played MK7 and MK8 so I can't say it's outright the best MK, but to me it's the most balanced and well-crafted kart racer out there. I don't mind the archaism of it at all, infact it attracts me (as you said, Mode 7, split screen and all that stuff).

Mario Kart 64 without a doubt. Best courses, best music, best game :D

Powerdrift was my thought too, and does tick the right boxes.

I loved the original Mario Kart and I used to host 3 player tounaments at my house on Sunday evenings in late '93 /early ''94. However, it was some 4 player sessions on Mario Kart 64 round a friend's house in 1997 that represented the pinnacle of the format for me. Good times.

MK DD is highly underrated. Probably my favourite with the original as my 2nd choice.

I voted for Little Big Planet Karting, very underrated and varied game. There's a looney toons kart game on Dreamcast which I fun. Mario Kart 8 is great and with the DLC has tons of levels.

There is actually 2 very decentish Dreamcast ones as there is the looney tunes space race and the whacky racers one. Street Racer too also decent although been a while since I played that.

Mario Kart 8 for me though. Did love Diddy Kong back in the day and Banjo & Kazioo Nuts and Bolts is an under rated gem of the 360.

crash team racing for me

it took the best bits of mario kart 64 and diddy kong racing and just made them better adventure mode, graphics, playability and controls

Another vote for Mario Kart here. All the Mario Kart games I've played have been great but the original just got it so right first time for me. Somebody mentioned earlier the 2 player mode didn't compromise anything at all and that just cant be said of many other racing games.

I put 'other' because you left off the best kart racer ever Mario Kart DS! Shame the 3DS version was a slow piece of turd!
