Why do so many people play retro games in 16:9?

Post by batman877 » Tue Aug 25, 2015 6:14 pm

I'm sure most of you on here play retro in the correct aspect ratio, but just looking at YouTube clips, social media, websites, TV shows - it seems that the majority of people "enjoying" retro games don't know what 4:3 is!

Is there a genuine lack of knowledge out there? Why would anyone want to stretch an image out of proportion? Is it just an assumption that old games look crap so they don't notice the difference? Whatever the reason, the ignorance just winds me up.

Sorry for the rant... it's late!

I really hate this too... I believe a lot of consoles displayed a squashed image on a pal TV, maybe some people see that as part of their nostalgia. Maybe they dont know any better. Maybe they just hate to not use every inch of screen space. Maybe they're just lazy idiots that don't think to change the settings...

On a slightly different note ST and Amiga games often had virtually identical graphics but the Amiga displayed them at a different ratio resulting in squashed graphics on the Amiga or stretched graphics on the ST depending on your perspective. This annoyed back then, now, not so much...

You see it with old tv shows too, some people have to have it full screen in fattyvision, not understanding that borders either side are a good thing. Does my head in.

Maybe this is to blame for the rise in obesity, so many people watching 4:3 tv in 16:9 and thinking short and fat is normal?

On emulators I always choose the 4:3 option even if there is a small border either side. Using stretched 16:9 just makes it look worse.

Fair enough if it doesn't bother you, but I just can't understand why anyone would want to make something look worse when there is a choice.

I used to hate it in the 80s and 90s when everyone had 4:3 TVs and people were "enjoying" crappy reformatted pan-and-scan versions of movies. I always bought the more expensive 'letterbox' versions. But now everyone has a beautiful widescreen TV they watch films as they were originally intended but retro games and old TV shows they watch in stretch-o-vision!!!

Playing 4:3 games in 16:9 always affects the image, you're stretching it out of proportion!

Some of these games look so stretched and weird, especially on wide tablets. I know people hate black borders, a throwback to the horrible PAL days with the horizontal black borders at the top, but these ones on the side are for the optimum picture!

I notice on the Wii U Virtual Console, the N64 games are at 4:3 and not stretched out, and the SNES as well. So whether its on the Gamepad or the TV, it looks "right".

A benefit of being an early computer gamer? Those all had big borders right around the image, so the little ones on consoles never bothered me :D

Are you secretly a girl?

I'll bet you listen to music on tinny speakers and think that's fine too ;)

I hate having borders on my games, I'd much rather stretch the image slightly out of proportion to fill the screen.
