Almost all 2D games seem to scroll the other way apart from SkyKid, so are there any others?

Kamikaze for the C64, which is a bit like Sky Kid, scrolls mostly right to left. Balloon Kid on the Gameboy. There's a Hello Kitty game on the Famicom that does I believe. Kung Fu Master has three stages of the five go right to left. Technically Choplifter is as well because the base is at the far right of the playing field, and thus you always have to go right to left to the POW camps.

There's a version of Super Mario Bros on NES Remix Vol 2 where you run in such fashion and play only as Luigi.

I believe someone in Nintendo said that they chose Left to Right for SMB because our brains prefer it that way.

Hello Kitty World for the NES and i'm not 100% sure but if you finish all the levels on Pac-Land you have to go back and redo them all backwards

The awful section in the awful game that is Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde for the NES, where you go right to left as Hyde. Doing what I'm not sure.

If we're including game unlocks, after you get 100% in Donkey Kong Country Returns, you get a harder mode that goes right to left but one hit kills...

Something that has always confused me - I assumed games go from left to right because that's the way we read, but don't the Japanese read the other way?

Another question is why do scrollers usually go up rather than down?

I can think of some that have down-scrolly bits, but none that predominantly or solely scroll downwards.

Section Z scrolls left, right, up and down!

Kung Fu Master is predominantly played in the other direction.

Yeah - get to the end of a world and you have to go back through the world to the start point.

Some levels in SMB3 have right to left sections.

Probably because it makes a little more sense... either akin to moving forwards, so what you encounter is in front (which obviously it is the other way around still, but it isn't so logical from a viewpoint perspective), or gravity. Things drop from high to low. Two random thoughts there.

It also fits with the standard text scrolling direction that would have been in effect with early character based games. Its easy to make a 'road' scroll just by printing off the bottom of the screen in most BASICs for example

Those scrolled bottom to top though, so your character/car/thing was at the top of the screen usually.
