So I FINALLY got to the final boss (Tatanga) at the weekend, but man he's a tough one. Any tips?
No rush. It's taken me 25 years to get this far

Use an up down rhythm to avoide the fireballs he throws at you, as they have an up down pattern themselves. Once you find the groove, it can be fairly easy.

First game I ever beat was Super Mario Land I think. It was the happiest day of my life, until I finally finished Link's Awakening

This ^^^
Ignore trying to shoot at him, just hit the button and focus on the pattern of the fireballs and dodge, it is pretty simple if you follow this.

Downloaded it on the 3ds a couple years back and finished it start to finish in 25 mins, Tatanga is the easiest boss ever, keep yourself alive as others have said rather then go for the kill.

Congrats - I never did complete Super Mario Land myself, but I've managed to acquire 2 copies over the years. (I bought the first one separately and the second came with my GB Pocket when I bought it out of a Cash Convertors a couple years back)
