Don't forget on Axelay on the SNES. Might not be the very best scrolling shoot-em-up out there but it certainly is worth playing if you like such games. Also Salamander/Lifeforce, Star Force, Recca '92, 194X, Gun.Smoke and many others.

Probably better you read the topic title before you comment.

Got me there, didn't really notice the thread was about side-scrolling shooter and not vertical-scrolling shooters...

Though, Axelay combines both aspects so it might be considered as such anyway.

I was at first going to go for both, but decided to pair it down a little since its such a big genre... Think vertical shooters will probly be my next kick though!

Though many arcade vertical shoooters will be horizontal if you mount the monitor normally!

Here's a challenge - can anyone name a side-scrolling shooter that uses an aerial-view rather than a side-view?

Saxion and Uridium on the Commodore 64

Arcade wise would Sega's Zaxxon and SNK's Viewpoint count as they're sort of diagonal scrolling and Soldier Girl Amazon

Yep, didn't think of those myself! All I could come up with was Speccy River Raid, and it's cr*p!

They're not an aerial view anyway - they're both isometric. And I'm pretty sure Soldier Girl Amazon is a vertical scroller like Commando...

I'm not sure if the following would be way too obscure but

SNK Pulstar R Type clone
Konami Thundercross 1 and 2 aracde
Xanac x Xanac PS1 and Arcade
Magical Chase PC Engine
Dead Moon PC Engine
Vulcan Venture arcade think it may have been a Gradious game in Japan
Cosmic Avenger arcade and Colecovision
Looping arcade and Colecovision
Gaia Seed
Bay Route contra clone arcade not particularly good
Macross Super Famicom very good
P47 Thunderbolt
Sky Soldiers
Death Smiles 1 and 2 Cave 360 arcade
Monkey Magic
Sol Divide PS2/Arcade
"Crush the Old Order and CREATE A NEW SOCIETY!"

Oh yes, I do like Pulstar (and Blazing Star).
Vulcan Venture is Gradius (Nemesis) II. There's a Gradius III as well, which is just insanely tough.
R-Type had a sequel R-Type II, with a ludicrously hard level 2 boss, and there's a more arcadey 2-player co-op game to be had in R-Type Leo.
Slightly less well known is the second Prehistoric Isle game, with bigger pre-rendered sprites and zooming effects.

You should try Toaplan's Hellfire too, which has a button to switch between four different firing modes / directions. I can't promise you'll like it, as personally I think that's one too many to keep track of.

If you are going into ST emulation, you have to track down the PD super-fast Defender style game Cybernetix.
Chronos on the Speccy is a great little game; less frantic than most, so your games are more likely to last a while. Nice HHGTTG references in the scenery too.

The C64 has a particular style of horizontal shooter, which you'll either love or hate. Shiny metal maze-like scenery, and a small handfull of enemies that take an insane number of hits to destroy. Io is probably the highest regarded, but see also Armalyte, and if you like dying within seconds of pressing START for no obvious reason, Delta.

I find alcohol helps!

Sadly I can't think of anything side-on in the same class as Wings of Death. Agony on the Amiga looks exceedingly pretty, but there's not much substance to it.
