Side-Scrolling Shooters?

Post by sirpigmeat » Wed Mar 25, 2015 8:33 am

After the excellent advice I got from Shadowman on the mega man series, I was wondering if anyone here can give me a rundown on Side-Scrolling shooters? Its a genre i've always enjoyed and have a reasonable level of skill in, but for whatever reason never fully got into.

I can only really remember completing Parodius on the Saturn and Silkworm on the amiga. I played others but never got too far.

I'd like to start with the classics that defined the genre, the first of their ilk and ones that brought in new ideas that became standard later in the genre. I'd like to play through them like a "history of side scrolling shooters". Also any games that didn't bring anything new to the table but were just ace.

Want to move on to modern stuff from their, about which I know even less.

I'd like a good list of the best games, the best series, the best games in those series and the best systems/places to play/get those games.

Might have more questions once I have a better idea of what familiarizing myself with the genre involves.

Cheers! :D

Loads of great games, Gradius, Thunderforce, Rtype etc

But my favourite of all time is UN Squadron on the Super Nintendo.

I've played gradius and R-type before, but just never put in the effort to get past a couple levels. UN Squadron i've never heard of.

Gates Of Zendocon (Lynx)
Darius Gaiden (Saturn & Arcade)
Sagaia (Mega Drive, PC Engine & Arcade)
Air Busters (Mega Drive & PC Engine)
Gaiares (Mega Drive)
Psychosis (PC Engine)
Protector: SE (Jaguar)
Callisto (XL/XE)
Arrow Flash (Mega Drive)
Zero Wing (Mega Drive & PC Engine)
Vanguard (XL/XE & Arcade)
Steel Empire (Mega Drive)
Star Ray (ST & Amiga)
Mr. Heli (ST, Amiga, PC Engine & Arcade)
Atomic Robokid (Arcade & PC Engine)

Probably a lot more but these came into my head as I was typing.

Cool, couple of the names our familiar but don't think i've played any of them. Air busters sounds familiar though, might have had a go in the arcade maybe?

R-Type is my favourite, and can get pretty complicated. The first two Bosses are legendary, and Levels 3 and 4 are certainly eye-openers. After that it kind of tails off a bit. It popularised instant pick-up weapons (though also from Salamander), charged-up shots, and greater control over an add-on orb thing. See the likes of Rezon and Last Resort for bodged attempts to take the idea any further.

Darius (arcade) is memorable for the huge three-screen set-up, where the middle one is actually a reflection so it merges seamlessly with the other two into one wide display.

Also a big fan of Tengai, a pretty animé inspired shooter spin-off from a vertical shooter series.

Cave are legendary creators of shoot-em-ups, but I often find them a bit too obscure - while the fans rave about uncovering the increasingly complicated and obscure scoring and multiplier systems. My favourite of theirs though has to be ProGear, which uses gorgeous Miyazaki-inspired whacky aircraft, tanks and lush rolling scenery. Although features young girl gunners dubiously named 'Chain', 'Nail' and 'Rivet'...

Thunder Cross II has a neat control mechanism for outrigger weapons, referenced in later Parodius games.

Air Buster / Aero Blasters (Arcade / Megadrive) is a fast-moving one with some neat tunnel sections that play almost like a rally game, with turn warnings popping up, and a pick-up that gives you protective scenery bumpers.

Finally I'd suggest Raiga - Strato Fighter - a fairly decent shooter with a button to turn round and shoot behind you. Actually, have a go at Side Arms, which simply gave you two fire buttons to shoot left or right. It plays lovely on an ST using the mouse. Though its pick-up system can get a bit fiddly to manage in the middle of a scrap.

Sidearms (arcade), Apidya (Amiga) and Scramble (arcade) are my faves.

I love the first three levels of R-Type but consider the second of half of that game to be awful!

If Resogun counts (it is a wrap around scroller) then that's my favourite.

I think Thunderforce 4 may be my personal favourite (or maybe it's Hellfire?), anyway, both Mega Drive games and both ace.

A favourite in the arcades was Prehistoric Isle by SNK. Mainly because it looked really cool shooting town Pteradactyls in your little Bi-plane!

If you want to go really retro, Thanatos on the Specccy is good fun. You control a big dragon and get to burn down villages. Also, Uridium on the C64 is a classic.

Other than that there are some pretty fun games that incorporate side scrolling shooting in the gameplay. Wonder Boy 3: Monster Lair and Captain America and the Avengers spring to mind.

You could try Sky Kid or Sky Kid Deluxe - an early cute arcade one notable for scrolling in the opposite direction to most shooters.

Blood Money, Menace, Agony, Project X, X-Out, Apidya, Z-Out all on the Amiga are excellent games.
It's an area the computer was very strong in.

I don't remember Delta being on the Amiga.
It looks fun though on the C64.

Ah yeah, Blood Money was great on the ST.

Can also add Anarchy on the ST/Amiga to that list.

I loved Midnight Resistance on the Speccy, if that counts?

Jetpac?
