No more TxK

Post by The Laird » Wed Mar 18, 2015 12:51 pm

Jeff Minter is now being targeted for IP infringement by the modern version of Atari for his game TxK.
Jeff Minter wrote:So yeah all the stuff we had ready or near ready will now never see the light of day.No TxK PC, PS4, Oculus, GearVR, Android. Thank "Atari".

I do have to say that I am not really that surprised with this. I really like Jeff and have met him many times and had some cracking chats with him. What he created with Tempest 2000 and evolved with Tempest 3000 was genius. But at the end of the day the IP belongs to Atari and he can't change that. The name is not really obscure either as he claims, T2K, T3K . . .TxK. Pretty obvious really.

I guess the next step from here would just be him licensing the name, which would add more authenticity to it.

Because this one made money, obviously.

Morally Jeff's in the right, legally he should have cleared this with Atari before he wrote the first line of code.

For a company as massively in debt at Atari that is good.

Meh, Atari acting like dicks TBH.

However Jeff updated Tempest for Atari and did well with it, that however does not give him the right to release blatent clones of the game.

He is a talented fellow but upadets of already existing games seems to be all he wants to do in the last few years.

I thought Atari went out of business, recently as I know they have before

They filed for bankruptcy and sold some of their IP. Nobody would meet the cost of actually buying the whole company. Then the CEO suddenly came up with a load of cash and took back control.

Despite what many people claim they have never actually "gone out of business"

Minter's taken use of the IP for granted tbh. That said, Atari's actions here only make sense if they've got their own version of Tempest coming out. They could have licensed the game for easy money but chose to strangle it. Maybe they've nicked the source code. We might see the game on PS4 yet.

Ha, Minter's twitter mentions that Atari's legal attack dogs expect him to hand over all his source code. So it's an obvious steal - stop the game, grab the code and then publish it for themselves. It's a twunt's trick and Minter and crew need to fight it even if it means crowdfunding etc. Is Minter in the IGDA or anything? He needs backing for this otherwise the Atari scum get clean away with it.

From what I understand they asked for the source code to see if any of it matched the Tempest 2000 code, which is pretty stupid given the games were written for completely different hardware.

They wouldn't be able to publish it themselves as Minter would own the code, just not the IP.
