Initally all the ones that sprang to mind were PC FPS, but taking a more nostaligic view led me to the arcades of the 80's.

1) Counterstrike (PC) - Played way more than anything else.
2) Quake (PC) - Mainly on crappy dial up so prediciting where someone was moving to became the main skill.
3) Gauntlet (Arcade) - Would qualify just for the memories of the sound bites.
4) Double Dragon (Arcade) - My most fondly remembered scrolling beat-em-up.
5) Battlefield 2142 (PC) - Loved the setting for this, and the role of commander was great fun.

Honourable mention - Streets of Rage 1/2, Unreal Tournament, Natural Selection (Half-Life Mod), Battlefield Desert Combat.

Unreal Tournament - was a close call with Quake
Mashed - was another close call between this and Micro Machines
Powerstone - 1 or 2, not sure! Think 2.
Bomberman
Mario Kart

Forgot Gravity Force 2! Hmm..

Are we talking strictly local , or online, or mixture?

1. Powerstone 2 - A better mans Smash Bro's. Destructible environments, great characters, animations and much better hit detection.
2. Blast Chamber - Similar to Bomberman, but in 3D much more intense.
3. Soul Calibur - Still one of the finest and most balanced console fighters to date.
4. Goldeneye - Kind of goes without saying , doesn't it?
5. Toy Commander - An underrated gem of a multiplayer game. Commanding your own 'toys' in a 3D simulated family home. Reduces a grown man to a 12 year old in seconds.

1. Speedball 2 (Amiga) - The best fun to be had against another person.
2. Unreal Tournament (PC) - I have yet to play a FPS with better level design than UT.
3. Supercars 2 (Amiga) - My favourite top-down racer, still plays well today.
4. BattleBlock Theatre (PC) - So cute, so humorous, so much fun.
5. Gauntlet (Arcade) - Elf needs food badly!

In retro terms Bomberman was always a laugh in multi-player but my fave would have to be Battlefield 3 on new gen consoles. :D

Whittling down to 10's as good as I can do!

Bubble Bobble - simple, fun, classic and it rewards you for playing with a mate!
Goldeneye - it's all been said already
Super Mario Kart - again...
Gauntlet - it was always amazing to play this in arcades cos often you wouldn't even know the other 3 players!
Worms - a brilliant and hilarious concept that was so much fun!
Sensible Soccer - my favourite football game ever
Golden Axe 2 - I've always preferred the second one and still give it a dusting off with a friend every now and then
Halo: Reach - I personally think this is the best in the Halo series, but I've been known to be wrong from time to time
Toejam & Earl - cool concept and plenty of laughs had with this gem of a game!
Chaos Engine - I was originally thinking one of the Contra games, but the variety in the playable characters snuck this one for me.

I'm only going to go for single-screen multiplayer games here (as in everyone plays on the one TV set...)

Goldeneye 007 (Perfect Dark is technically superior with far more options, but does have more slowdown in some cases)
Bomberman (Nothing I can say that's new - now look over there while I chuck this bomb over the wall...)
Mario Kart (The earlier games were by far a superior multiplayer experience. With the Wii it took a massive turn to the dark side.)
Wii Sports (Granted, it's just a small minigame collection, but Wii Bowling is FUN - nobody can dispute that.)
Micro Machines (V3 on the Playstation is probably one of the best ones - with up to 8 players...)
Where logic won't work, I will

1. Chaos - What the game was designed for. How ruthless or merciful can you be to your fellow player?
2. Neo Turfmasters - Brilliant golf game that requires skill to beat the human opponents.
3. Winter Games - Gets a 10 from LEN!
4. Bruce Lee - Who gets to be Bruce v The Green Yamo?
5. Gauntlet - Play it on your own and it's an ok experience. Play it with some other guys and game play wise it really opens up.

Stunt Car Racer (Amiga) - We only did this a few times, but it was totally brilliant racing each other round the track on two Amigas and TVs linked together.
Bug Bomber (Amiga) - We much preferred this to Dynablaster. Lots of different things you could send after your enemies, and it got very hectic.
Bubble Bobble (Amiga) - A classic. Me and a friend got to the last screen once, but were killed by the end fight.
Lotus 2 (Amiga) - Great graphics, themed tracks, and music made this a game we played a lot.
Super Cars 2 (Amiga) - Micro Machines was good, but we played this much more.

Honourable mentions to:
F1 Grand Prix (Amiga) - It was a time share type of two player, but it worked quite well, and was always exciting to see how the Amiga had done while your friend was driving.
Speedball (Amiga) - My favourite Speedball game.
Kick Off 2, Goal, and Sensi games (Amiga) - All brilliant football games.
Dogs of War (Amiga. There's a bit of a pattern emerging here...) - An excellent Commando/Ikari Warriors type war game that often crashed when we got to England. We did finish it eventually, and got the brilliant end screen that said [spoilers]Congratulations! You have completed Dogs of War.[/spoilers] :|
Also, there was a good top down car (and tanks, and all sorts) game, that we called "Good Game". The actual name was very forgettable, so we'd just say "Shall we put Good Game on?" , but it was an Amiga budget game. We played that loads with three players. [edit]It appears that it was Super Grand Prix by Codemasters.
Microprose Golf (Amiga) - We probably played this more than Leaderboard (C64), and it's probably my favourite golf game ever (with the Leaderboard games close behind).
The Chaos Engine (Amiga) - Great graphics, music, and gameplay.
Worms: The Director's Cut (Amiga) - Making my own levels in Deluxe Paint was fun.
Laser Squad (Amiga) - One of my favourite turn based games, too.
World Games (Amiga) - This was great fun. I think we had 4 players on this, and we used to practice for ages, then get together and try to beat each other.

Halo 3 is the most popular Halo of all time, and arguably the most balanced fps shooter or all time. However Reach is a near perfect multiplayer experience, it is the complete package. Purists may look at 2 as the best, but 3 only improved. For me, 3 is best. It is 2015, and we're still meeting up for Halo 3 LANS, not many other current gen games have caused that.

Call of Duty MW.

Tekken (series) 1-tag, i don't care, Tekken 3 is a loved game, huge sales and awesome reputation.

Mario Kart, all of them, just take your pick.

House of the Dead 2 arcade.

SoulCalibur IV is the best Soul game.

Twinkle Star Sprites, really nice game for all kinda of game fans.

Bust a Move - Mums, dads, kids we all like it. A lot more accessible than bubble bobble.

Gran Turismo, obv.

Future Cop LAPD.

Goldeneye plays like turd these days, really. Bomberman for me is over rated. Will have a think later about more games.

Streets of Rage, purely because if your buddy steals your food or weapon, you can just turn on him and beat him down
