1. Tetris This will be played by people 100 years from now. The version doesn't matter. There are better puzzle games (Puyo Puyo for example) but nothing matches Tetris for accessibility. It is equally good in solo or multi-player, and it can be as casual or as hardcore as you like  (see Tetris Grandmaster).

2. Super Monkey Ball Gorgeous control and level design in the main game + years of replay in the mini games in single and multi-player mode all wrapped up in solid and charming graphics.

3. Super Mario World It has its rivals (SMB3, Yoshi's Island and the new 2D upstarts) but this is still unsurpassed in terms of depth, charm, control and replayability.

4. F-Zero X For the sheer rush of racing with spot on difficulty balance (GX is too hard for its own good) nothing comes close. The health vs speed trade off is a brilliant update to the original. Splendid multi-player, Death race and hardcore TT modes back up the main game.

5. Worms Armageddon Turn-based mechanic makes for superbly vindictive play laced with humour and tactics. Infinitely replayable with the level designer and large weapon set.

6. Saturn Bomberman Definitive version of the finest same screen multi-player game ever. Modes and options galore including an impractical 10 player mode and an addictive Solitaire score attack mode.

7. Super Mario 64. My head says Galaxy is better but my heart says this has better replayability, tighter level design (yet at the same time feels more open) and more charm.

8. Warlords This would be alongside Bomberman as a multi-player game if there was a convenient way of playing this on a modern system. Only the Atari 2600 version has the paddle controllers and that is the only way to play this.

9. Mario Kart DD - 2 characters per kart offers scope for team building unique to the series and the co-op mode is underrated. Great tracks and a LAN mode. The Baby Park track offers Roman chariot racing.

10. Mushihimesama Futari Best 2D shmup I have ever played. Addictive as hell scoring scheme and loads of modes squeezed into 5 levels ranging from the too easy Novice Mode right up to God mode.

OK here it is, for my 5,000th post the definitive list of the 10 bestest games ever...

1. Bubble Bobble (arcade): The PERFECT game, easy to play, tricky to master. Tonnes of fun, can be played solo co-operatively or competitively. Beautiful graphics, fun jaunty music, absolutely brilliant conversions to loads of home systems. I have a life rule, Never EVER trust someone who doesn't like Bubble Bobble.

2. Warlords (Atari 2600) - Best multiplayer game on any system ever. FACT

3. Football Manager 2 (Spectrum) I could've filled this list with 10 Footie Management sims, but "the beard" had to have top spot. This one has to be my favourite just for the sheer amount of time I've sunk into this.

4. Speedball 2 (Amiga/MegaDrive) - Played through this so many times, love this game.

5. Smash TV - Was between this & Robotron - this one wins because of it's "Running Man" vibes

6. Sonic 2 - The best Sonic and therefore by definition the best platformer

7. Tetris (Gameboy) Well given I played it non stop for about 3 years I guess it had something going for it.

8. Thunderforce 3 (Megadrive) My favourite MD horizontal shooter...and I LOVE my MD horizontal shooters

9. Missile Command (Arcade) - Always loved this & it was an absolute privilege to see Tony Temple play this in Blackpool

10 God of War (PSP) - Well I had to have ONE modern game in there!

Here are mine - to make it easy on myself, I haven't chosen any arcade cabs, and I've tried to pick the games I've played and enjoyed the most - still so hard to pick just ten though -

Tiger Woods 2005 (Gamecube) - best multi-player fun I've ever had with a videogame.

Civilization (Amiga) - Still play this loads now, love the simplicity of the gameplay compared to it's many sequels.

F-19 Stealth Fighter (Amiga) - Great strategic flight sim - the pedestrian pace of the Amiga's CPU didn't really matter with this one.

Resident Evil 4 (GameCube) - The best Resi game, faster paced, slicker upgrade to the series.

Super Mario Land 2 (GameBoy) - Only Mario platformer I have had the patience to complete...

Command & Conquer Red Alert (Playstation) - Loved it, played it again and again - real-time Civilization for me.

Crash Team Racing (Playstation) - Another great multi-player, fine kart racer - better than Mario Kart 64?

Kikstart (Commodore 16) - Super little arcade game, so playable.

Pokemon Pinball, Ruby&Saphire (GameBoy Advance) - Great pinball game that can be played for weeks and weeks to build up billions on the scoreboard.

TOCA 2 (Playstation) - Fast and furious racer with a very good opponent AI.
Death may be your Santa Claus.

Keep them coming guys, some great choices so far, both here and on the facebook page.
It's still early days yet but the number 1 from 10 years ago isn't even in the top 20 at the moment!

I'm not even going to bother listing ten. It's simply impossible.

Final Fantasy XII. Quite simply a revolutionary and incredible RPG. Never fails to blow me away when I play it. Amazing visuals, amazing locations, amazing sound, amazing combat, amazing game.

I'll edit the rest later.
