Like most people this will change by tomorrow:

Metroid Prime
Fallout 3
Ocarina of Time
Doom
Shenmue
Quake 3
Rez
Adventure (VCS)
Shadow of the Colossus
Bully
Edit: Portal and Portal 2! How could i forget.

There are so many that could go here. I wanted to put Dragontorc of Avalon on here for being so ahead of it's time, but i could only play it with cheats on as i found it too hard otherwise

Oof, it's gonna be tricky to pick such a small amount...

Tetris - quite possibly the most perfect game ever made, an impossibly timeless title. The Grandmaster versions tweaked the game to absolute perfection.

Resogun - a recent game but one that stokes the high score fires within me, the intense micro management in the game makes it an impulsive experience.

Super Mario 64 - nostalgia overload but one that lives up to the rose tinted specs we all look through.

The Legend of Zelda - The Wind Waker - built on the success of Ocarina of Time but arguably the better game in my eyes. It was seriously like playing a cartoon.

Metal Slug - the first one and the best. The difficulty is just right and has just the right amount of silliness before it all went wrong with aliens and zombies.

Rez - what an experience! It still feels amazingly fresh and has a soundtrack to die for.

Ketsui - the best shoot 'em up period. A game that isn't clogged down with the loli and moe nonsense that infected alot of CAVE's later titles, it's a proper manly game.

Uncharted 2 - I'm playing through it again now and it's the most epic of games. Scripted as hell but it tells a fantastic story, I love the Nepal setting.

Batman - Return of the Joker - on the Gameboy no less. Amazing graphics and animation coupled with tight levels and a truly triumphant last boss fight.

Crazy Taxi - there hasn't been a game like this before or since. It was a brave idea that really shouldn't have worked but it did. Dreamcast version is the best due to the superior Original city.

Have done these lists before and no doubt this will be different from last time I did it...so tough to pick ten all time faves and bound to still leave favourites off. So this list is based on thinking back over the years at what games just had me playing marathon sessions I had not intended to

1. Doom/Doom 2 (PS1)
2. Robotron (Arcade)
3. Tomb Raider original (PS1)
4. Resident Evil 2 (PS1)
5. Silent Hill 2 (PS2)
6. Castle Wolfenstein (Apple II/C64)
7. GTA San Andreas (PS2)
8. Any infocom adventure game!
9. Sentinal Returns (PS1)
10. Lode Runner (Apple II/C64)

Tough tough choices. Many faves left off, and may not be the greatest games of all time...but they are my faves anyway :)

I have browsed through all the replies so far and I am surprised how easily I can dismiss much of it. I guess that is what you call taste. Work in progress:
(01 best, 10 last in list)

09 Crystal Castles (Coin-op) - The proper standup with trackball. Escher-like and isometric, what more do you want?
08 Marble Madness (Coin-op) - Fantastically abstract and avantgarde, and that perfect trackball controll. There are not enough trackball games!
07 Robotron (Coin-op) - Huge Euge is a genious and this is pure gameplay perfection. I'll even forgive him for bodging the Defender controls.
02 Gauntlet I/II (Coin-op) - Has to be the proper 4-man, the Amiga as much as I like it just don't get the palette right. Picking I or II doesn't matter for me.

03 Addams Family (Pinball) - I think this ate more money than anything else during my year of military service. Perfect playability and perfect samples and ideas.

04 Impossible Mission (C= 64) - Gfx, animation, sound, atmosphere, randomness and patterns, puzzles, gameplay, smart death system. Just perfection.
05 Dropzone/Datastorm (C= 64/Amiga) - Fix the Defender controls and you get this monumental game. As if you gave a fix pill to a lunatic and he came down on the genius side :-)

01 Tetris - Perfection. Abstract. Neverending. I played this to death as xtetris on a unix workstation while studying, but it is so simple an idea that any hw can do this justice. The saying that you should keep removing stuff until you can't remove any more fits this game perfectly.

06 GTA III - This or Vice City; doesn't matter which one. The freedom and the radio channels and the "livingness" of the city made such a difference. Note to space game creators: Put in a lot of traffic of all kinds of on-rails and free-moving vehicles and it will feel so much more alive.
10 Timesplitters III/II/I - FPSes never hooked me, but this had enough of humour and arcade twists to tickle my game bone.

Just like your list, apart from maybe tetris, none of those games would even make my top 50. so call it "taste" or whatever.

Exactly - its all a matter of taste, but i'd say NorthWay's list is probably the list of 10 games I'd least like to have on a desert island of all the lists produced so far!

Crystal Castles and Marble Madness are pretty great shouts though, both top games. Asking for just 10 is really tough.
