Worst 8-bit arcade conversion ever?

Post by Slackdog » Sun Dec 28, 2014 8:39 pm

With games I actually played the 'conversion' of Green Beret (Atari 800XL) made me sad it was that awful! What's the greatest letdown for you?
What was more amazing to me was the challenge of making it work on the less capable Commodore 64. It was a real nightmare implementation, but I did it. - Archer Maclean

As a racer fan, I'll go with Chase HQ for the C64. A horrible, sluggish, unplayable monochromatic mess.
Luckily Probe did a fantastic job with Chase HQ II.

I'd think that the worst one ever to (dis)grace the Spectrum would be Track and Field. It only ever appeared on a compilation however, and there's much speculation that it was hastily written only when they found out that the game didn't have a Spectrum port after all the packaging and advertising had been made.

[predictable nomination]

Outrun for Amstrad CPC - Unplayable mess that appears to play in reverse.

[/predictable nomination]

Aaaannnd... the vast majority of other CPC arcade conversions. A whole lotta crap.

Outrun (CPC) for me too. A very bad conversation.

The CPC had a load of great arcade conversations though. But lets not derail this topic with that argument.

After the brilliant ZX Spectrum version, I would plump for the CPC conversion of Green Beret. The scrolling was dire. Funnily enough I enjoyed the Spectrum version of Kung Fu Master at the time. Probably because I never played the arcade version to compare it against.

another vote for breakthru there was a time when they seemed to be releasing a series of `anything that was in an arcade`

they were converted with no real love....

I can only comment on the speccy versions though

but breakthru was appalling

Chase HQ C64 is up there but if you increase the speed via emulation then it becomes playable-ish.

The worst on C64 for me were WEC Le Mans (nice car sprite though), Hard Driving and Double Dragon.

This was my nomination, it's near enough unplayable. I would also throw in the Speccy version of S.T.U.N. Runner, never should have even been attempted.

Also the person who said Green Beret on the A8 is correct, but the C16 version is even worse. In fact the C16 has quite a few really awful ones, Ghosts N Goblins is another example.

The bad outweighed the good by a country mile though, but you're right - let's not derail :D

Someone beat me to it but I was going to say Ghosts n Goblins on C16.

Only two levels and I don't think I made it past the boss at the end of the first level.

Green Beret of course which was shown up by the excellent Bridgehead featured in this months Minority Report.

Was Commando an arcade port?
