All supermarkets by me only carry the top 5 or so titles per console and the same old last-gen sale items that nobody is interested in. Several don't stock the Wii-U or games and most don't even bother with handhelds at all so no, supermarkets are not a good alternative.

Also, I cannot be bothered with all the security attached to games in supermarkets. Everything is either alarmed to hell and takes ages to get through a till and past the overly picky "No ID no sale" types (seriously, you can get ID'd for 12-rated stuff in the Morrisons by me  ) or you end up standing at the end of a till for ages and ages while somebody walks off really slowly to retrieve a disc from some sort of storeroom (again, usually Morrisons).

CEX is the only alternative in my town and the next one over.

But we have the internet for everything else. If we must have a shop for walk in purchases, make it anything but Game. That shop is everything that is bad about game stores. There's a wider selection and better prices without any of the hassle at CEX, Cash Converters or any number of other places.

Given how bad Game are, I'd happily see the supermarkets be the main source of high street gaming. At least they understand how loss leaders and things work and don't constantly try to rip you off.
The problem with Supermarkets is a far more limited range of game is stocked. Want the latest blockbuster? No probs. Well known 'catalogue' title? Yeah, probably got it. Non AAA game from a mid level publisher? Nope, can't help you there.

Despite the somewhat dubious practises employed in many branches of GAME, as long as the majority of video games purchased are actual physical discs, then we need a dedicated high street chain to sell them in, or all most gamers will see is endless seas of COD and FIFA boxes.

Don't about anyone else but we have Grainger games in the Newcastle/Sunderland area which are a decent alternative to game.
There are a few near me in Manchester, but they are all in the smaller "satellite" town centres surrounding the city (Altrincham, Ashton, Sale etc). And they have no branches South of Nottingham. GAME remains they only dedicated national video game retail specialist shop.

So, I bought 4 games from game online in the sale... all avg £2.70 each.

2 of them turned up in lovely condition, very happy. (Alpha Protocol and Vanquish PS3).

2 of them turned up in an non desirable state, firstly they sent the wrong game (I ordered James Bond Blood Stone and got Quantum of Solace) and then they sent SOulCalibur 4 (360) disc loose in its case and with no manual. really kind bummed about that.

the online side is pretty good price wise, consistently pops up with some of the best bargains across the internet and compared to all other stores, not sure why people think they are overpriced online? maybe some games are compared to others but i'd say it evens out with the odd real great bargain I see online. its just down to luck if you have a decent store with decent staff. i've never had any problems using my local one and i've got some fantastic bargains in there over the years and the staff have always been knowledgeable and helpful. if they try and sell you other stuff at the till you just say no and I have found that the subject is dropped. its never been so bad that its comparable to chuggers, they have never been pushy from what I can remember. I preferred it to using gamestation, the local one seemed to be full of obnoxious staff who weren't interested in the customers, that had never seen a gamecube disc before(!) and were more interested in dossing about and blaring out music from a hifi. their prices weren't any better than game from what I remember and had less choice.
one shop I do miss is electronics boutique, that local shop was always good for gaming.

supermarkets locally to me have always been terrible for games, there is an enormous tesco superstore in town but it stocks next to nothing in terms of games. morrisons supermarket is even worse in terms of choice, one tiny shelf bookended awkwardly on the entertainment aisle, less than 3 foot wide which stocked everything game related. and the recent huge sainsburys that was exapnded ain't too great either, in fact when I went there last week I noticed that have halved the amount of ps3 games to make way for disney infinity toys. so now their choice is pretty woeful too.

I posted in a similar thread recently about how I walked out of Game in disgust after seeing their £5 mark up on Amiibos - and not even the rarer ones. I was going to get one as I was in town and Game was there, but I'm not paying extra when I know I can get stuff cheaper online. I see no reason to ever shop in Game. If I'm ever in there these days it's so I can browse games I might want to look up on Amazon later.

It's a shame we don't have Grainger Games down south, I used to love browsing the shop in the Metro Centre when I lived up there! CEX or Tesco are the shops that get most of my gaming business these days.

Er, any idea how anyone would actually go about getting in touch with Game customer service? Do they even have a CS dept? Bought a new game and got a beaten up used one - but, hey, had a purple sticker on it so it counts as new, right? - emails get bounced back, telephone is just a sales line, web chat down and I'll be damned if I'm paying return postage costs. Even messaged via Facebook. First and last time I use GAME online.

Maybe go into a store if you have one near by? At least you can speak to an actual person. The sensible thing for them to do would be to give you a new copy straight from their store stock, but there may be administrative red tape so insist on speaking to the manager (a pet peeve of mine is people who think the saturday staff actually have any power to do stuff like that), and if need be insist they telephone head office on your behalf.

Their customer service is awful, paticularly the web chat. Though I have discovered that if you go on to say you're making a complaint, 'no operators available'. Say you have an enquiry about the PS4/Xbox One, get a response in record time...

I often see games in their "2 for £20" deals that were around £5 before the promotion.

Because they managed to get away with it?

Because they have a virtual monopoly as the only national retailer of video games?

Corporate greed?

All of the above?
