Market share wise, the industry is a handful of big publishers - not a "stupid statement" more a matter of fact.

The question was, when was "your" most exciting time in gaming... on a retro forum, it can't come as a surprise that NOW wasn't everyones choice??

Is this a retro forum then?

My most exciting was probably waiting for the N64 to come out! I remember having dreams about playing Super Mario 64 and getting really excited about Turok as well! The shift from 2D to 3D is something we won't see the like of again until someone makes a holo-deck or something!!

VR imo. Oculus Rift + Cyberith Virtualizer are already doing it, though I doubt it will become mainstream due to the costs and space it requires. I guess the next batch of console will dab a bit more in VR, offering some mainstream/affordable attachments.

80's and 90's. 00's and 10's haven't really captivated me in quite the same way, aside from the occasional pc game here and there. I have been impressed with some consoles over the last 15 years though, namely the x360 and gba.

The 8 bit era with bedroom programmers, buying a magazine then inputting some code yourself really cannot be beaten, easily the golden age of gaming for me. Buying Crash magazine was a religion back in the day, I love flicking through the odd issue something I still do on a regular basis. The complete 1986 binder is one of my prize possessions. Every era has its good points, however being around in the 8 bit era won't ever be beaten imo.

The 90s, particularly the PS1 era. I was still young, so every game purchase counted - I couldn't just buy what I wanted. That in itself added a certain magic to gaming. But then, the jump from an Amiga to a PS1 was huge (as I made) - and games like Abes Oddysee, Final Fantasy VII, Crash Bandicoot, Tekken 3 and Medievil seemed revolutionary.

The Dreamcast Era - 1999 - 2001

The peak of my teenager years, at college, hacing free evenings with mates. Multiplayer at its finest (Ready2Rumble, Revolt, VTennis, VStriker, Power Stone...the list goes on)

not to mention my most cherished single player experience ever...Shenmue

I thought I would know the answer to this instantly and quickly answer the NES and Snes days, but when I truly think of it I have to go with the late 90s and early 00s. Just so many great PC single player games.

Mid to late 90s for me. The hype surrounding the N64 was ridiculous and for a brief while it delivered. Then going straight from that into the import Dreamcast was fantastic, especially considering that my local Gamestation stocked all new JPN releases. I used to pick up a new game every week, getting Crazy Taxi the day before the Japanese release date was something unheard of in my town. Plus all the arcades were still around in force, I have fond memories of meeting good friends around the local arcades.
