Doom.

Put a bit of time in Black on PS2 but not sure Id bother again even though I enjoyed it.

Played Duke Nukem on PS1 but wasnt as good as Doom so went back to that.

So Doom it is.

Yeah, definitely Doom.

Others I have enjoyed: Exhumed (Saturn), Zero Tolerance (Mega Drive), Wolfenstein 3D (Jaguar), Alien Trilogy (Saturn), Medal Of Honour (PS1), Cyber Virus (Lynx), Blood Shot (Mega Drive), Atlantis: Last Resort (CD-i) and Golden Eye (Wii).

HL2 is hard to beat, to be honest.

Some amazing ones that are definitely in the argument as well are Goldeneye 64, Wolfenstein (the original), Call of Duty (you may not like it, but hard to deny the sales figures).
LFGdating | Goldeneye, Red Alert and KOTOR are probably my Top 3 of all-time.

Ill give CoD4 an honorable mention, the online multiplayer was amazing. Perfect maps, perfect leveling and the TrueRank servers filtered out all the P90 wielding Juggernoobs.

I'm sure they're not the best, but I've played these more than any.
I forgot about Perfect Dark - that is up there as well, although still behind Goldeneye IMO.

Doom to me was great, but the original wolfenstein trumps it. Going to have to put HL2 in front as well, haha - sorry!

Another Vote for Doom here.

With the following playing runner up......

Half-life (and the various add ons etc)
Duke 3D
Unreal Tournament
Rainbow Six: Las Vegas 2
And lots more.......

I've finally got back to playing Half-life 2 (Orange Box, PS3 version)
I've never completed it (unlike the first one) and havent toched the other episodes yet. Its a great game with some fantastic set pieces but I've just found it going on a bit. I know I'm not the best gamer in the world but it just feels like it's never ending. Sections which are outstanding which you want to play again and again separated by dullish intervals. Maybe its just the volume of driving sections but I just cant put my finger on it. Unlike other games which I have completed it just hasnt grabbed me as much and I'm just forcing myself to finish it before I move on to the episodes.

Single Player - Star Trek Elite Force or Soldier of Fortune PC
Multiplayer - Quake 3 Arena/Rocket Arena 3
I forgot about Elite Force, such a cool single player game. I used to love wandering around the ship between missions, talking to the crew. The weapons were hella cool too, and the holo match was fun. I never even liked Star Trek, but smashed that game.

I'd have to say I forgot about Quake1+2+3, I played Doom at a friends house but Quake was the first FPS I ever played, and the modding scene put out some fantastic gems. Mad props to all the id games over the years, they truly released some genre defining classics.

Also, DNKROZ

Quake, Quake 2, Doom, Half Life, Half Life 2 all up there for me...

.. However, the BEST FPS for me has to be Bad Company 2, in fact I'd go as far as to say that's one of my favourite games of all time, certainly the one I've sunk most hours into.

Free on Games for Gold this month too.... Ah... enjoying all that fresh meat!

I wonder if id will ever manage to repeat what they managed with Doom, but also Quake and Wolf3D. I think they know it would be hard, if not impossible, to do that, so they're rather trying to "live up" to former fame now. And it's not a bad thing, as we are seeing in many other games these days, for example Street Fighter IV being heavily inspired after SFII, MK IX heavily after MKII, Mario Bros. U after SMW, ect. Experimenting may not always yield terribly good results as Rage has shown us. Not to say it was a bad game by any means, just unspectacular and hardly groundbreaking as the older id franchises were in their times. To make something that would really blow away the gaming community now would require a lot of risk-taking as well as delivering the whole, enjoyable package, and still it could go wrong, as games like Destiny show us (looking at critical and player reception rather than sales). But still, people have this idea of a "FPS messiah" that will come and deliver us from the "mediocrity" out there, in which the new Doom, as well as a (hypothetical) Half-Life 3 are high-ranking titles, as in, to re-define or re-write the genre conventions anew while having superb gameplay to boot. I'd just personally hold my expectations low so there can't be a possible disappointment. But always keep a bit of optimism to itself.

On-topic: Doom is deservedly leading, imo. It was that "milestone" title that changed the gaming landscape forever and it still plays damn fine. The soundtrack is also one of the best in shooters to date. One of those "evergreen" titles alongside such titans like Space Harrier, Mega Man, Super Mario Bros. & World, Street Fighter II, Sonic The Hedgehog and so on.

Halo or Bioshock. I remember kaning Rise of the Triad a lot in the "olden days" though as this is a retro site an all.
