So what is your best FPS then?
It's probably been done before, but I've no intention on searching the forum because A: I'm crap at it and B: I'm lazy.
So what's the best then?
For me there can be only one, and that's Half Life 2 and it's episodes. Valve got everything just about perfect when they programmed this. The graphics, physics, sound, gameplay, atmosphere, difficulty, and variety of weapons and levels felt and still feel absolutely spot on. I had played and enjoyed the likes of Wolfenstein, Doom etc prior to this, but it was HL2 that forced me to love the genre. There's plenty of other great titles out there, but none come close to HL2 for me.
Hopefully the best will get even better when (or if) HL3 sees the light of day.

For story and atmosphere I'd agree that HL2 is hard to beat.
Competitively I would go with COD4: Modern Warfare on console and CS: Source on PC.

For storyline and set pieces it's Return To Castle Wolfenstein. For it's use of augmentations, the light disc and light-cycles Tron 2.0 is brilliant also.

Turning Point - Fall of Liberty. Underrated classic.

Doom without question.
Everything else is just varying levels of 'not as good as Doom'!

Goldeneye 007 (N64) for me.
Proved that FPS games could (a) work on consoles, and (b) Be about more than just shooting stuff and collecting keys to find the exit.

Re: So what is your best FPS then?
Definitely concur with the Half Life 2 comments, it is not only the best first person shooter for me, but also one of the best games of all time, just so many brilliant set piece moments, the 'We Don't Go To Ravenholm' level alone is just the most eerie, desolate experience, and an encounter with those poison black head crab, and their sinister hiss, snarl, and screech still make the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.
Fighting the striders in the city, the gravity gun, varied locations, the scale of the game, and some genuine seat of the pants boss battles like the helicopter gunship, make this stand head and shoulders above the rest IMO.

That game was a great idea but also renowned for being broken as fck! It was a slog to finish.koopa42 wrote:Turning Point - Fall of Liberty. Underrated classic.

You have to see beyond all that. It's the hidden shine of the game that truly shows.Joey wrote:That game was a great idea but also renowned for being broken as fck! It was a slog to finish.koopa42 wrote:Turning Point - Fall of Liberty. Underrated classic.

Toss up between Goldeneye (the original) and/or HL2. Both incredible games. But then HL1 is pretty amazing too and up there with the other two.

Doom for me as I just enjoyed and played it so much. Half life 2 is close but like a good movie that you are never bothered if you see it again it not, I just never played it more than once.

I'm sorry - with games like Doom, Half Life 2, Deus Ex, Wolfenstein, Bioshock - hell, even Halo, in this world, I fail to see how anybody can still count Goldeneye as "the best".
Especially since Perfect Dark was better

Hard to look past HL2, isn't it? For me it's almost a given.
So, aside from that I'd probably say Dark Forces - just something about it that's always stuck with me. Bioshock not far behind.
Honourable mentions for Bulletstorm, The Darkness 2 and Resistance 3. I know they're by no means classics but one thing I look for in an FPS is how it 'feels' to fire the guns. Too many games feel like you're waving an air rifle on the end of a long, flimsy stick. Those games I've mentioned all have a great, almost gratuitous feel about them.

Re: So what is your best FPS then?
I've got a few faves I keep coming back to;
Halo: Reach
Goldeneye
Dark Forces
Doom (esp Final Doom)
Medal of Honour (PS1)
There are plenty of others I like, but I'm finding it harder and harder to get on with them - I really can't stand COD!

Re: So what is your best FPS then?
First halflife really hooked me. never really enjoyed the sequels.
Doom was also a fave, and Rise of the triads.
As for consoles I would go with The first Halo, Goldeneye, and call of duty 2.
