Double Dragon for me. I mean how can you go past Jimmy and Billy's slickly oiled, tanned bodies with loosely draped vests over, I mean come on, it simply DOESNT GET BETTER THAN THAT!

Streets of Rage for me

Double Dragon was fun, but the series got way silly by the third (The Rosetta Stone) and even a D&D 1-on-1 fighter was just a bit much.

While I enjoyed playing the Golden Axe series, I just wasn't that into the setting nor most of the enemy characters

Speaking of Golden Axe - there was also the excellent Revenge of Death Adder, which never got ported to any home system and remains an Arcade-excusive title to this day (emulation notwithstanding):

Other unported gems are also Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Alien vs Predator and Turtles in Time (original Arcade version, not the cut down SNES and MD ports and 3D remake).

Double Dragon will always be king of the beat-em-ups, a class apart from the others listed

Here's a beat em up I used to enjoy on the MD:

Was a blast with two players.

Here's the Japanese cover (called "Crude Buster" there):

Also, Mystical Fighter:

Kinda like Golden Axe but more rooted in Japanese mythology.

For me its the 'always bleated about' Streets of Rage. To this day the first two remain good strong games with fluid movement and control , great two player mode and quality music. Even the third isnt altogether awful.

I would say Final Fight but the Snes version was comparitively guff , needed a MegaCD version to really get the proper experience of the game including use of all 3 characters without need for a second cart.(just a second console..)

Mystical Fighter - i used to love that game. Quite some variety of moves in there and some nice hidden bonus screens along the way. Still playable now , but the animation frames are a bit minimal and the flying kick graphic is laughable.

Should also add that with the unofficial sequel / mash up / greatest hits Streets of Rage Remake you also have not only a fourth game in the series but the best unofficial compilation of the other games that you could hope for.

Double Dragon was ridiculously easy to finish on 1 life and Combatribes is the true unofficial sequel to Double Dragon 2 same team who did the first 2 games.. Rosetta Stones was just weird fighting Aliens, Mummy and Cleopatra as the final boss

Been wondering what that game was called for years.. Played it via emulation recently again it was ridiculously easy did it no continues first go..> The fire wheel boss was quite hard last boss just slashed him with the sword didn't touch me, then I got a message you've not completed the game properly!!

Did you ever get a proper ending I'm assuming you have to find all the hidden rooms I could only find three

Was quite some time since I last played it so I don't quite remember it anymore.

True, it was not that hard and also not very long but still an enjoyable little game for two players or on your own.

Why is there no Vigilante in the poll? that was a great game.

There's some classics in there but I voted for SOR series.

Most other pretenders to the throne surfaced in the arcade first, which just served to make the SOR series even more unique at the time. And SOR is simply fantastic. Final fight was great, but for me was not as good. Although it did look marginally nicer than SOR 2, and far better than number 1. Plus the SNEs really ballsed up its port, the crappy MCD had the best version.

Honourable mentions to Mazin Wars and Cyborg Justice. Oh, and Drunken Master.

I always thought a fighter and a beat-em-up were the same thing.
A scrolling beat-em-up is a beat-em-up that scrolls...

Street Fighter 2 is a beat-em-up... or a one on one fighter... or a fighter

Final Fight is a scrolling beat-em-up or a scrolling fighter...
