Best "beat-em-up" series?

Post by outdated_gamer » Wed Sep 03, 2014 3:05 pm

The side-scrolling beat em up, these days a pretty much extinct genre but living on in spirit in action-adventure/slasher games like Batman Arkham series, Assassin's Creed, Prince of Persia, Bayonetta, ect. and also unique action games like Viewtiful Joe and The Wonderful 101. The question here is - which do you consider best?

You may only vote for one and it is suggested you also write down why exactly did you pick that choice.

Anyway, for me, I will have to go with Batman, as I consider the action-adventure/beat em ups in that franchise the most consistent, comming from developers like Sunsoft and Konami. Of course there was also some "licensed trash" like Acclaim's Batman Forever and UbiSoft's take ons the franchise, but in general it's the only real "survivor" franchise, also manifesting itself in the excellent Arkham games in the modern times.

The older TMNT games were also really good too.

Your opinion?

streets of rage will probably win this one. never been a fan myself, imo one of the most overrated series of games ever.

weedy, garish and terrible sounding but megadrive owners never stop bleating on about them.

Personally, I also prefer FInal Fight series over the Streets of Rage series.

Streets of Rage 2 was very good though. Pushed the MD to it's relative limits too.

Looks like this has been almost 100% copied from a poll I posted elsewhere ;)

But anyway, Streets Of Rage - no contest. All 3 games are great and SoR2 is still the best beat 'em up ever made.

I voted something else as Body Blows was my favourite beat-em-up.
It was the game SF2 should have been on the Amiga.

I have absolutely no love for this genre whatsoever (sorry, Shinobi)...but Golden Axe reeled me in bigtime, to the point that it remains the only arcade game i've ever completed.

So GA it is then. :D

Renegade. It has the most violent moves, is the most realistic and also the most fun.

Only it wasn't a beat 'em up, it was a fighting game

Beat 'em ups are scrolling games were you face several opponents at the same time.

Yes, fighters are the "one on one" (or two on two) types and without stage progression. Whereas beat em ups feature multiple enemies and stage progression, as in moving along rather than just "skipping" to a new stage (versus fighters).

There actually wasn't a "strict" seperation between fighters and beat em ups prior to Street Fighter II, as much as I understand. But with the explosion in popularity, the distinction came along aswell. Beat em ups kinda declinined in popularity too, whereas in the 80s and early 90s they were still very popular. It could even be said that the traditional beat em up evolved into the action-adventure/hack n slash modern game, which I already suggested in my opening post.
