Fantastic machine. Great fun to collect for. One of the very few handheld systems that it's actually comfortable to use (as an adult) thanks to it's beautiful chunky design. Very nice ageless black finish and lovely curved ages too. Just great design all round. The battery problem is no longer a problem. Modern batteries last far longer than they did when I was a kid, I've been surprised by how much play time they've given me. You can also buy 12 packs of name-brand batteries in pound shops these days too, so very good value. Or, as has been said, do the LED mod and get even more out of it.

Must-own games:

Cosmic Spacehead (same as the SMS version, far superior to the MD version)
CJ Elephant
Wagyan Land
Fantastic Dizzy
Excellent Dizzy Collection
Micro Machines
Marble Madness
Outrun (great music)
Man Overboard
Dropzone
Sylvan Tale (great Zelda 'clone')
Road Rash (as has been said, frustratingly slow, but otherwise could be the most impressive game on the system)
Ristar
Gunstar Heroes
Tempo Jr (fantastically vibrant cartoon visuals and animation)
Berlin Wall
Power Strike 2
Tales' Adventure (Metroidvania!)
Factory Panic (an action puzzle game starring Gorbachev!)

I could go on and on and on.

Ok, one more: Master of Darkness! Excellent Castlevania rip off.
