Is the PSP retro?
I dug mine out tonight to get it ready for its annual excursion, and to try out Jeanne d'arc. And tonight was the first time I looked at it and thought "wow, you're looking old, tired etc”. And then I realised I've owned it for around 9 years. The Vita has replaced it now and that has been out for a while. But I still can't decide if it's a retro system or not.

Recently discontinued ≠ retro.
Wait until the Vita is superceded and pulled from shelves, then it might be worth asking this question. The PSP is a fantastic retro tool once hacked but of itself - nah.

Re: Is the PSP retro?
Technically it falls within our 10-year remit and we may well do a one-off feature looking at its retro-based games (there are a lot) to celebrate the anniversary in December, but again, that doesn't mean we'll be covering it on a regular basis. There's certainly a lot of requests for it though.
Re: Is the PSP retro?
What makes this difficult more me to decide is that, despite it being ten years old, when I think of retro gaming I think this:

...and not this:

Yet I suppose it does fit a criteria. I wouldn't object to seeing PSP stuff in the magazine.

The DS will be 10 in November too.... and the 360 will be 10 next year.
With longer life spans of consoles, I don't think the 10 year "rule" is appropriate any longer.
You know, RG is thinking of buying a console that I can still buy in Argos.
That's not retro...its still a great console, but no way retro.
An article in GamesTM would be appropriate though.

I'm amazed that you can still buy them new in a high street store. I had no idea.
Retro is a state of mind, and cares not for your puny concepts like dates and calendars.

Re: Is the PSP retro?
I guess im with Roo in that Traditionally I think of retro as what I played as a child and teenager , pigeon holing time frames doesnt really work as we all think differently on where our retro limit lies..
I didnt know anyone was still selling new PSP consoles , maybe I should invest in a new one just in case.

Yes it is.
I have no problem seeing coverage in RG.
