Post by Darran@Retro Gamer » Thu Jun 26, 2014 6:27 am

You know the drill. Tell us your top 5 Atari 8-bit games and we'll write an article about them :)
I am referring to the 8-bit home computer games, not console games.

I suspect this is going to come over as a list of excellent C64 titles that were converted or concurrently developed from the even better Atari 8-bit originals heh...

Mercenary
Dropzone
Ballblazer
MULE
Bounty Bob Strikes Back
Lie with passion and be forever damned...

I can't really do a top 25 as I only had one Atari for a short time as a kid. My uncle gave me an atari 2600 jr with a small stack of games. the games I enjoyed were.

Defender
Moon patrol
Centipede
missile command
pitfall
pole position
combat
Joust

The only games I had at the time, but I loved every one of them. played them to death.

Are we talking Atari 8-bit as in the home computers, consoles or everything combined? I'd tend to assume the former, but some of the suggestions so far don't seem to fit with that.

Anyway, I'd tend to go with:
1. Mercenary
2. Koronis Rift
3. Boulder Dash
4. Star Raiders
5. Seven Cities of Gold

With an honourable mention for Yoomp! which isn't really old enough to count as retro.

Moon Patrol - a little rough graphically, but plays very well indeed, the cartridge lives in my 600XL.
Mercenary - a truly superb sandbox game.
Zybex - "just" a conversion of the C64 budget blaster, but it's addictive and a little easier too.
Humanoid - more cheap and cheerful shooting, probably something of a Marmite game.
And Space Harrier if we can include homebrew or Bruce Lee if not. =-)

never bothered with the atari computers, and the 2600 is 8bit isn't it? so I just went with that

Atari 8-bit refers to the line of computers - the 400, 800XL, XE etc. This Wikipedia page lists the models.

The only one of Atari's consoles in this range is the XEGS.

It should be made a bit clearer then. Some of us don't really have an affinity with atari. Like I said the 2600 is 8bit to me and the title said Atari 8bit. Should maybe change it to atari 8bit computers.

When I first saw the thread I was thinking, Keystone Kapers, Pitfall, etc., but then thought I'd wait to see if it only meant the computers. I've never even seen an Atari 8-bit computer, only the VCS, then ST.

Both of them are available on the Atari Computer range.
Most of the big Activision titles were made for the computers as well.
