OlliOlli Thoughts

Post by Darran@Retro Gamer » Tue Jun 10, 2014 11:05 am

We're doing a new feature that looks at new games with old school mechanics. First up is OlliOlli, so tell us why you like it here :)

Beautifully simple like all great games, but adds layers of complexity that will keep hardcore gamers going for ages.

A game that despite causing raised blood pressure & swear words to exit your mouth on a regular basis, keeps you coming back for just one more go. You can plan on playing it for 5 minutes, which magically becomes an hour & the very second you switch the game off due to frustration & exhaustion, the urge to switch it back on immediately is overwhelming.

I bought it at launch but just couldn't get used to the control scheme so haven't played it since :(

Well it's only going to be a two-pager. Kind of a making of/this game is great type of thing.
We've got things like Super Time Force, Spelunky, Rogue Legacy and Miami Hotline in the pipeline going forward.

four pages would be better, two pages not enough for a game like Spelunky, but still, it's a start and it should be good. Loads of games you could choose from, XBLA and PSN etc filled with the types of games you are looking for.

Its insanely addictive, sometimes frustrating but it has that clasic "one more go" factor that kept me coming back. I finally mananged to clear all the challenges and Rad mode on the game. Well worth every penny.

It's infuriatingly hard but as a result infuriatingly addictive. When you fail, you always feel as though you know how NOT to fail - and that "this time, you'll do it..." it doesn't always work out that way, but every challenge feels possible - no matter how hard it actually is.

Yep, it is hard. A lot of tricks. I had to resort to youtube video to check out others playing, which has helped a bit. (Good job Hotline Miami had toughened me up a bit).

If it weren't for Super Meat Boy, then Hotline Miami I never would have given this game a go. They made me seek out 'hard' games, when I realised how addictive they can be. From there I moved into Dark Souls, which I also loved.
