Super NES vs Mega Drive

Post by outdated_gamer » Sun Jun 08, 2014 2:46 pm

It's the classic retro console battle fought yet again.

On one side, we have the Super Nintendo (aka SNES), on the other the Sega Mega Drive (aka Genesis for US people). Both systems had many games, some of which true gems, Arcade-quality graphics and sound (not really, but let's pretend they did, eh? ), lots of novel attachments (e.g. CD drives, in-cartridge enhancement chips, mice, motion pads, light guns, ect.) and so on.

But you can pick only one. Which one will it be?

edit: voted for the SNES. Even though I like the MD, I find SNES had the higher quality games in general and the MD fell kinda short in terms of colour output, sound and control. But I must admit I almost rather play MD games these days.

Not really a fair battle if we involve it, eh?

Though, a good PC back then costed a real fortune. And these consoles still had a fair share of appealing exclusives going for them. Even multi-format games were interesting on each system as devs actually bothered to make the different versions feel unique (opposed to today's simple "downscaling").

They're both utterly fantastic. Not being old enough to have owned either first hand back in the day, I have mixed feelings on them.

The SNES seems to be the jRPG powerhouse of the time, while I think it's safe to say that the Mega Drive has the superior platformers and arcade ports of the time.

My current gaming tastes would dictate that I prefer the Mega Drive - but owning either is a win as far as I'm concerned.

That said, I currently own neither. Guess I prefer my PC Engine Duo R?

Well, there wasn't a poll attached to that one so that's a good enough reason for me to post in here :)

I voted undecided as I had too much fun with both to pick a clear winner. One day it would be SNES the next it would be MD, the third and fourth would be PCE....

But one thing I would say is the MD's Achilles heel was it's sometimes weedy sound chip.

Both fantastic, but the Snes edges it for me.

SNES all day long. It just has far more games that appeal to me.

SNES.

I had a Genesis, but it was very rarely used. I found very few games on it that I had an interest in, and there werent any that kept my interest long. It's gone unused for years.... I dont even know if it still functions. ...and I really dont care much, either. ....also, there was the issue of the sound. Regardless of game, the damn thing always sounded like it needed cough drops. I generally turned the volume way down when using it.

The SNES I have lots of games for, and it gets used when I'm feeling un-lazy enough to hook it up. And it's of the final generation of consoles that I actually held onto, instead of selling off after tiring of them.
