Swearing in games

Post by Shin_Gouki » Sat Apr 07, 2007 7:01 am

I've noticed that since GTA III was released every second game is peppered with words that's make anyone's Mum cry. The first game I saw (and I say saw as it was text) swearing in was Final Fantasy VII, when Barrett describes Shinra soldiers as "B@st@rds" and exclaims "Sh!t" when the party is set upon. I was taken aback, as I'd never come across it in a game before.

So what was your first encounter with swearing in a video game?

While I've come across plenty, Kingpin is the only one that struck me as being shocking in any way - the swearing just seemed unnecessary and out of context in that game. In most of the others, its seemed natural.

Battlestar Galactica aside  , it definitely falls into two camps. Some games appear to apply it gratuitously simply for the novelty value....'look at me, I'm a maverick developer and my games got loads of swearing. Although it has to be said I think this is rarely the case nowadays and was mainly limited to a period of time where games were just finding their feet with adult themed content.

With others it simply fits with the theme and context and arguably would be notable by its absence.
Swearing is certainly more mainstream nowadays, with mild swearwords now being prolific throughout most forms of media and broadly accepted before the watershed on TV and Radio.

Magazines including RG and particularly Gamesâ„¢, feature words like sh*t, and f*cking, within their pages, which I'm sure wouldn't have been the case a few years ago.

Cultural changes and all that.

I think it was in the demo of Beneath a Steel Sky- one of the characters says "bastard" IIRC.

Didnt really come across swearing in any Speccy games but i remember for some bizarre reason typing in swear words into Valhalla. Funny as anything as from what i remember if you type in a swearword then one of the characters comes over and whacks you for doing that !

I think it was Kentilla?

Only recognised the first 4 letters you type, so entering

Break Window

shortened to

Break wind

And promptly reset your computer!

That would be Mary (as in Whitehouse).

The Delta 4 adventures are my favourites, they'd elicit some very well thought out responses to several sweary actions. Except Robin of Sherlock, which just reset and was most annoying for doing so.

Not the first, but some of the best is in The Getaway: Black Monday (I think thats what its called).

Kingpin was quite good too. Only recently seen Conker and find him hilarious.

Swearing is both big and clever :D

Flashback on the Amiga did had some few swearing. Might have took place in the second level where you're undergoing a big tasks by travelling through four continients.

You meet this guy at the bar where you asked some questions about the photo. Then this person went on and said: "By the way, he's a tough son of the b****."
