The first RPG I remember putting any amount of time into was Alternate reality on the Atari 8 Bit. The first RPG I remember playing for months was Ultima IV on an XT (Amstrad 1512), but I think I actually finished Space Rogue before I eventually finished the Ultima game.
I must have spent months on both those games, way back in the monochrome 'Green Screen' CGA 1980's.

My experience is surely a common one for those also in their mid-twenties: the first RPG I ever completed was the first one I ever played, which was Pokémon Blue. It seems quite basic now, but back as a ten year old I was amazed by how much 'game' there was in the original Pokémon.

If you count Text Adventures then it would be "Subsunk" on the Amstrad CPC.
If you were to count the pen & paper RPGs then it would've been one of the old "Fighting Fantasy" series of books by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone.
However, if you're only counting actual computer-based RPG (as in experience gain, levels & so on, rather than action adventures such as the Zelda series) then it would have to be "Super Hydlide" on the Mega Drive.
Where logic won't work, I will

That would be Y's on the Master System. What a sense of achievement that was.

That I can remember it is Baldurs Gate for PC.

Eye of the Beholder on the Amiga. Eventually.
My first JRPG would have been as late as Final Fantasy VII. First I played, and still probably my favorite.

Probably Final Fantasy IX on PS1. Despite owning loads of RPGs of that era, for whatever reason I would often get to the end and never finish.

FFVII.
It was the first rpg i ever played as well as finished. That game was the one to kickstart my love of the entire genre. No idea why i didn't play any 8/16 bit titles when contemporary...they just passed under my radar.

Probably The Bard's Tale on the C64, one of the early classics.

Really not a huge fan of the Japanese style RPG, just found all that grinding a bore. But the first one I did actually complete was the first parasite eve. Excellent game. Have finished various zelda games and more western style RPGs like fallout etc...

Does, 'The Alchemist' on the Speccy count? If so, that was mine.
And yes, I would dearly love to see proper remake of this

Illusion of Time (of Gaia known in N.America). A great little action RPG from Enix. I bought Soul Blazer, its spiritual predecessor afterwards.

It'd be Journey Into Danger on the ZX81 for me. Looking back, it's so primitive that it makes your average Rogue-like look like Skyrim but it certainly fired the imagination at the time.
I also enjoyed Perilous Swamp, Sorcerer's Island and the 7-part multi-load epic that was Black Crystal at around the same time.
