Modern Ridge Racers

Post by felgekarp » Sun Apr 06, 2014 11:00 am

I've been playing the Slipstream version on ios lately, which isn't too bad, but are any of the recent console versions any good? I wouldn't mind having a crack at one or two if they're worth it.

I hated Slipstream... It was choppy as hell when I tried the Android version, the iOS version was better but the drifting just feels so broken. Once your into a drift the car might as well be stuck on a scalextric track. It might look the part but it plays worse than the original.

I really enjoyed ridge racer 7 on ps3, ridge racer 6 on xbox 360 is also decent.

I would avoid ridge racer unbounded though as that is a very poor burnout ripoff. :D

Harsh - it's a deeply mediocre Burnout ripoff!

Ridge Racer 3D on the 3DS is all right, especially given that you can pick it up for a couple of quid these days.

The drifting physics - as mentioned above - might be so unrealistic as to make Mario Kart look like a sim racer, but there's a nice 3D effect and a seriously long campaign mode that you could easily sink a good 40 hours into before finishing.

Drifting in Ridge Racer has always followed the Scalextric model.

Aren't 6 & 7 the same game on different platforms?

The PSP ones are good, though the first is redundant, with the sequel just being an expansion of that.

6 + 7 are different games - 7 is kind of a 6.5, different campaign mechanics, some new courses and some of the graphic effects are different too.

Ridge Racer 1 and 2 on PSP are very good although I'd suggest just getting 2 as it is near identical to 1 but with more content.

Absolutely true.

in fact, in the first few games it didn't even matter which direction you were going around a corner as long as you were skidding when you did it, allowing you to do spins on them.

I still remeber doing the 360 turn. you basically start drifting in the opposite direction of the corner and the car would do a full 360 and still end up going the right way.

I used to love the old ridge racer games, but they have lost all the things that made them great.

I loved Ridge Racer 6 on the 360. I spent 10's of hours on that game, unlocked all the cars, cleared the career mode unlocking and completing everything. Its a fantastic game in my opinion, well worth a play. RR7 is a similar game but I've never completed it.

RR 3DS was good. It got insanely hard toward the end and it didn't look all that great (in my opinion) but I still spent 30 odd hours completing everything.

The Vita version is flawed and is much better as an online/time attack game that a one player game as it doesn't have enough courses. Still I spent countless hours playing it as it was really addictive when it comes to getting better lap times than other teams. I ended up Platinuming the game in the end!

I was wondering what peoples thoughts were on that, gave it a go and can't say I was overly impressed. I actually think the last good game which was comparable to original ridge racer games was probably the outrun 2006 game, or the psn/ xbox online arcade version.

The PSP games are the ones that came to my mind first when I saw this thread too. Well worth playing.
