I'm not sure a game where you can adjust the difficulty level necessarily counts as a hard game; that's just player choice. Unless the easiest setting is pretty brutal.

Ghosts'n'Goblins is a tough game. People do beat it, but like Manic Miner, it takes decades of practise.

Ghost n Goblins and Ghouls n Goblins are both very very hard.

Manic Miner? Not so much. Once you learn the "pattern" it becomes easy (easier??)

Virus on the Amiga... I wanted to love that game, I wanted to be good at it... I was rubbish and couldn't control the damn ship

One game that always made me swear a lot was Star Wars on NES. Actually, 2 games - the Japanese released Star Wars was a ballache too!

The Last V8 on the C64
An over head driving game where the steering controls were terrible, harsh collision detection and the viewable area was only a third of the screen ... I think some people only 'play' it for the music from Rob Hubbard! Zzap magazine gave it 37% which probably says it all

Super Meat Boy

A nice challenge with a dark version of each level!. When you die its your own fault but the instant restarts and the unlimited lives makes it bearable.

Ghosts 'N Goblins on the Plus/4.
I couldn't get past the boss at the end of level one and just gave up in the end (the conversion was rubbish anyway).

Marble Madness on the Amiga. Really struggled with the controls on that one.

Thrust (C16/Plus4) was also hard as nails, again down to the controls.

There's 2 of them Gorilla/Gatekeeper things on the end of the second level mind its easy to get them with so few obstacles and enemies impossible to beat even with Autofire

That reminds me Pin point on the Commodore16 couldn't get off the third screen

Infocom's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (multi-format). It's considered an achievement to get out of the first room.

Only if you let it. You have to make the decision to look up a let's-play or a walkthrough, and if you choose to do that before playing the game then you can't really complain.

Pin Point, was that a sort of Spindizzy type of game?
Vaguely remember it, another one I was rubbish at.

I think I'm just rubbish at games full stop.

Others have already mentioned Airwolf on the Spectrum and Pinpoint on the C16/+4, both games where the tape almost ended up being flung the length of the garden from my bedroom window. Nobody thus far has mentioned Fahrenheit 3000 also on the Spectrum. If the pixel perfect jumping wasn't bad enough, rebounding off obstacles might get you and then there were the valves you had to collect. Oh the valves, how I remember them. They would randomly flash red/green and if you touched them when they were red then death awaited. Thus, completing any screen became a random chance.
Cue the music, fade to black...
