The hardest games of all time

Post by Darran@Retro Gamer » Tue Apr 01, 2014 3:27 pm

Hi guys, we've putting together a feature on the hardest games ever made and would be interested in your input.
It's going to cover all games (Dark Souls etc) the only criteria is they must be teeth-gnashingly, swear-at-the-tv screen difficult.

Viewpoint on the Playstation is insanely hard as a shoot-em-up. It had a password system with a new code for each of the three restart points per level, and it'd take me multiple games just to get from one to the next. Then from the last restart point there's still a load of trouble to get past before each stupidly hard boss battle. I don't find the arcade (Neo-Geo) original anywhere near as tough.

Gears of War on Insane level.
Many pre 1983 arcade machines but Defender (in general) and Wizard of Wor stick out.
Super Mario Bros 2 (the Japanese one).

Recent stuff has to be demons/dark souls 1,2. Very hard.

I can't remember too many from back in the day. Hellfire on the MD, the Gradius series. Exolon, barbarian 2 iirc.

Yeah, loads.

Airwolf on the Spectrum... hard as nails. That first screen.... the re-generating wall. A toe curlingly hard game.

Bad Company on the Atari ST is just ridiculously hard.

Yolanda on the ST is a good shout too.

i think the hardest game that i've ever completed is Batman Returns on the mega drive,a good example of risk and reward (do i try to get the difficult to reach extra life or will it cost me two lives to get it?) and weapon management (saving the weapons that work best for the boss on that level).it took me many weeks of finding the best route through the level and enemy placement.

Eugene Jarvis told me that Smash Tv was impossible to complete on 1 credit, and I can't recall anybody 1cc'ing it

Shinobi PS2 I stamped on the pad after 2 hours of trying to beat that Blind guy.. In a fit off rag I threw the pad at the wall and attempted to snap it when fighting Shannon in the circus big top on God Hand, though people here tell me she's easy to beat..

Hardest game probably Dark Tower Commodore 16 and C64 I defy anybody to finish it

Hard difficulty wise or hard because of bad game mechanics?

Yolanda Atari ST, as the laird said. It was a joke how hard that game was. I must boot it up and torture myself just for 'anti nostalgia'

Yep, Yolanda is tough.

The first stage each of Army Moves and Navy Moves (at least on the Spectrum) are ridiculously tough, and just go on and on and on with the same torture.

Rick Dangerous (which Spelunky borrows a lot from) killed you over and over again. It wasn't exactly 'hard'; it just had so many hidden-death traps and you had to remember every single one.

Similarly Manic Miner was a tough old game, at least, to finish all 20 levels, but not as brutal as others already mentioned.

(The mag's already covered the impossible-to-finish-because-of-bugs games like Jet Set Willy in this month's bit on Fairlight II).

I would go for Super R-Type on the SNES, soooo hard. The super Star Wars games were also nails though some people swear they are good at them.
