Retro/modern equivalents

Post by pratty » Fri Jan 03, 2014 5:10 am

Excluding games in the same series, what are the modern day equivalents to retro classics? Which retro classics paved the way for great modern day games?

If this thread takes off it could be a useful resource for people wanting to disocover both new and retro games based on other games they have enjoyed.

For example:

I was playing some Mario Strikers Charged on the Wii last night, it got me thinking this is probably the closest thing to Speedball 2.

Also, I haven't actually played it but 3D Dot Game Heroes looks like the closest thing to 2D Zelda which isn't actually Zelda.

Donkey Kong Country/Rayman Origins perhaps?

What else have you got?

Theme Park to RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 perhaps?

Robotron: 2084 to Score Rush (Xbox 360)?

That's all I've got at the moment.

That's why I picked it, its a ten year old modern game, none of the versions being on retro systems and the HD release being on PS360.
