Best looking version of each machine

Post by RodimusPrime » Mon Dec 30, 2013 1:15 pm

For me its

The European / Japanese Snes. The US design is ugly.

The original Megadrive is far better looking than the model 2

Pc engine is infinitly better looking than its Turbografx version.

anyone else

Lynx II probably had a better design than the original, more compact and with top loading carts.

ZX Spectrum 48K rubber keyed model was iconic, though a shout has to also go to the Spectrum 128K heatsink model.

The white PCE for sure was the best, no question about that. Also, the Megadrive original model was sexy.

I like the original C64 case. On aesthetic grounds it's awful, but it has a charm of its own as well as the best version of the SID chip. The later model to me was an Amiga wannabee.

All the Amstrad machines were very very poor. But wait... the GX4000 console had a neat curvy shape. So they got one thing right!

Didn't like the look of the NES, I must say. Nintendo didn't take much pride in the appearance of their consoles, which is surprising considering their attention to detail everywhere else.

All. Day. Long.

Every other system, console, computer, car, and woman is fugly in comparison.

MK 1 MCD.

Bread Bin C64, whilst not a looker, held a certain charm over later models.

Jaguar Duo-ok, technically not released, but looked far better than the Jag/Jag CD set-up.

The first versions of the Mega Drive and Master System were much nicer than the revisions, although I actually prefer the look of the MD 2 & MCD 2 as a combo.

I think both versions of the SNES are ugly but the PAL/Jap machine just about edges it. In fact most of Nintendo's consoles are really fugly, the N64 looks ok I suppose, best of a bad bunch.

Like Spector I also agree that the rubber key Speccy was the best, with the 128k+ in second. Both versions of the C64 are horrid so I really can't choose.

I like all the designs of the PC Engine but the Shuttle is my favourite.

The Black Irish 2600 is my favourite version of that console, but each design has its charm. And while still on Atari I will go with Lynx II over the original model too and the 130XE for the best looking A8.

I'd agree with this, most are poor with atari machines being notoriously shoddy, it's the main reason why most of the machine front covers for the mag are abysmal

Random order (can't be bothered to be chronological):

Original phat PS2
Original PS1
PS3 Slim (first revision)
Mega Drive Mk1
Mega CD Mk1
Original GBA
Original DS
Euro/Jap SNES
Standard black Saturn
360 Slim (not the very latest model)
Pearl White Gamecube (with that basketball/baseball special edition being one of the worst of all-time)
PSP 2000/3000
Smoke (clear) N64
Original PC Engine
Panasonic FZ-1 3DO
Retro is a state of mind, and cares not for your puny concepts like dates and calendars.

The ZX Speccy is king, obviously. But aside from that the DS Lite, specifically the white one, was a thing of beauty. I'm not that big a fan of it as a console but it looked lovely at the time.

The Wondermega. My favourite Megadrive of all time and wanted one since I saw it in SegaPro back in the day.
GBA SP - wouldnt have minded an XL version for my oversized paws.
Dreamcast - My black one is sexy looking - the usual yellow looking ones not so much.
Euro Snes looks quite nice.
