If this was "most important consoles" as opposed to "greatest consoles", I'd probably have a slightly different list. As it stands...

5 points - SNES
4 points - PS2
3 points - Xbox 360
2 points - NES
1 point - Atari 2600
Lie with passion and be forever damned...

What about if you stick it into an Icade?

I'm only going to put into account the amount of hours I've put into it and the importance of it for myself (not including handhelds)

1) SNES - made me a Nintendo fan and was the biggest gaming event i've had, i was 12 years old and it made a BIG lasting impression to me, also => best controller ever
2) Xbox 360 - this got me back into console gaming after a very long hiatus and i've been gaming a lot ever since
3) NES - it was my first gaming console, enough said

EDIT : oh, just read that it has to be 5 systems

4) Playstation 1 - my first taste of next gen gaming after the 16-bit period, had some great games going for it
5) Playstation 2 / 3 - 3rd one for the added bonus of having a sturdy 3D Bluray player along some exclusives, 2nd one for the abundance of strange games

You tend to get a reaction when mentioning an iOS device on a gaming forum. It's not a proper gaming console!!! yells, aaarrrgghh, sacrilege, heracy, pulling hair out etc etc.

If it was computers or all gaming systems I would not have a problem TBH, but it was specified as consoles only, and I think its fair to say its not a console.
I don't know, the definition of a console has blurred a bit since the early days of the NES/SNES/Megadrive that just played games & nothing else. You could argue that the PS3 & 360 are just as much media hubs as games consoles since they have a lot of additional functionality built in. I'd argue that the ipad offers similar multi functionality but in a different package. I certainly didn't put it in my list for effect but almost left it out due to the potential uproar it could kick off. Considering the Ipod/ipad thread is up to 217 pages long on this very forum, I thought it was a worth mention for me. Anyway, I'm gonna leave that discussion there.

I accept everyone has their own opinions, and I'm not going to criticise anyone's choices. But why exactly is the Gamecube top of anything? Better than a PS2 or XBOX but not as good as a PS3 or 360, and without the same catalogue of games. Granted one or two classics like Luigis Mansion and Eternal Darkness, but that's about the games rather than the console. Can't play DVDs or Blu-rays (ok you may argue not necessary for a games console, but when your competitor's machines can) and with a controller that's at best uncomfortable, and nowhere near as nice to use as the Dual Shock. Granted it's an ace shape, but was made completely redundant with the introduction of the Wii.

Like I say, if someone can explain why it's a great console to own I'd be interested.

I presume that was aimed at me

Its top because i say so. That's the point. You clearly don't like it, that's fine....don't put it on your list. :)
