Master System over Mega Drive

Post by Black Ridge » Wed Oct 09, 2013 2:28 pm

I've been enjoying a fair bit of Master System recently. After being pleasantly surprised by the first Sonic game on the system, I wondered what games other people felt were superior on the system over the Mega Drive. What others did you enjoy over the MD alternatives? Even if its a series of games such as the Asterix platformers between the systems, or just conversions of the same game.

Not sure if I would consider it better, but the SMS version of Castle of Illusion is a great little game and I cant wait to try Land of Illusion now.

I don't agree about Sonic, but Columns is definitely a better game on the Master System.

I also think World Cup Italia '90 is better on the SMS, but that is not saying a lot really.

Yeah, I liked Sonic better on the SMS as well. Can't really put my finger on why exactly. Were the levels altered considering the limitations of the SMS?

The SMS Sonic had different levels to the MD Sonic 1. I admit the SMS one was a pretty good platformer, though I always prefer the MD games. Didnt really care for 2 or Chaos as much...

I'd say Global Gladiators (I prefer the level layouts), Marble Madness (the MD version has been messed about with - player 1 has the RED marble!) and although there's no direct 16-bit equivalent the original SMS Asterix is the best game ever to bear that licence.

I prefered the SMS to the MD full stop.

There was something about the SMS music and sounds that made me feel so happy and warm inside. The noises at the start up of each level, the echoey/hollow noises you made when you jumped on enemies. But nothing put a smile on my face more than playing the Bridge on Sonic SMS, and hearing that oh so sweet soothing music.

Probably my favourite peice of music from the whole SMS music library (that I know of)

loads of them
castle/land of illusion
f1
ninja gaiden/the ninja is much better than any of the shinobi games
dracula is a different and very good game

as a general rule if it was an arcade game ported to the ms it was rubbish

I know it's not an SMS title (at least I don't think it is) but Shinobi II on the GG was the best Shinobi game (again IMO). Different coloured Shinobs for different bits, it was great stuff

I've always thought of Sonic 1 on the Master System (SMS) as more of Mario game due to the more platforming nature of it when compared to the Megadrive version. I love both versions but the SMS version just edges it for me, probably from a more nostalgia standpoint though as this is the version I spent the most time with.

As I stated in the Castle Of Illusion thread, for me, the SMS version surpasses the Mega Drive version. They are different games again and when I play both version even now the SMS version stands out to me as the better game, i'm not sure what it is though that I prefer about it...

I HATED Jungle Book on the Mega Drive (even though Aladdin was a favourite), but Jungle Book on the Master System's something else entirely. Forty-eight times as playable and it just plain LOOKS nicer, somehow.

And obviously, Alex Kidd in Miracle World squits over Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle from a very great height.
