I was surprised by this, but the Playstation 2 is still being supported with games. Well, until September anyway, when EA of all people release the last ever PS2 game - FIFA 14.

Amazing run for an amazing machine :-)

I'm sad to see this one pass on, an excellent console that just kept on delivering to it's owners.
Sadly my launch one died in a lightning storm, think it caught a power surge, it was dead as a dodo :(
But, happily, it was replaces by a TEST PS2 :)
So PS2 gaming goodness continues, this time multi-region!

It all depends on what you consider to be retro.

What does everyone else think?

NO

I'd be more interested in seeing commercially available home-brew titles, like the Dreamcast has - PS2 SHMUPS anyone?

Homebrew for PS2 is woefull thanks to Sony not letting people chip it (Remember Liksang?) and it not being that easy to program for

The machine will no doubt be retro someday, but it was so popular, so ubiquitous, that it will never be "niche" or "cult", as a result it will never occupy the place in my heart that the Dreamcast has, for example.
The PS is a tough one to see as retro as well, despite it being nearly 20 years old.
In fact, in 2001 the MD and Snes were retro, despite them being only really supplanted by the PS some 6 years beforehand.
So it's a very subjective concept, rather than something one can automatically apply after a fixed period of time.

For some more modern context, the 360 will be 10 years old in just 2 more years, 2015, does that mean it's almost retro? The extended lifespan of the 360, as well as the PS2 before it, as kinda knocked the notion of retro into a cocked hat, in another 10 years, assuming there are any functioning 360's left, maybe it'll be retro then?

There are plenty of cult games on the machine though.

I can imagine them releasing FIFA games on the machine for a few years yet. At this point all they're doing with the PS2 versions each year is updating the player roster, there's no real time or effort involved so even if they only sell a few thousand copies why not? It's money for old rope.
