The best retro compilation is "Thalamus: The Hits" on the C64Darran@Retro Gamer wrote:What were the best compilations of old? What were the worst? What's your dream selection of games that you'd like to see on a compilation?
We'd love to know and this has nothing to do with a feature we're planning...
I caught up with the c64 in 1989/90 and the games on this compilation were all new to me.
Sanxion
Delta
Quedex
Hunters Moon
Armalyte
Hawkeye
Probably the best modern compilation has to be "The Orange Box"
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2: Episode 1
Half-Life 2: Episode 2
Portal
Team Fortress 2
Perhaps the one that i played most, was a very old compilation on the ZX spectrum that i got free with a joystick, "the sega collection" with:
Spy Hunter
Tapper
Zaxon
Buck Rogers
I still play these wonderful games on the spectrum to this day.
An honorable mention should be a gameboy advance compilation:
Konami Arcade Classics: Frogger, Scramble, Time Pilot, Gyruss, Yie Ar Kung Fu and my personal fave, Green Beret
Re: Classic compilations
I remember buying this for the Amiga in a Virgin Megastore for £19.99
Platinum (US Gold) AMIGA
Strider
Forgotton Worlds
LED Storm (bonus game)
Ghouls & Ghosts
Black TIger
My mum went mad I had spent so much money, sadly Black Tiger did not work, so took it back and got a refund a few days later, ended up buying Stider and LED storm later on on the Kixx budget label anyhow.
When I lived in a spain for a year, I bought a PS1
and picked up:
Midway Arcade Hit (PS1 & DC)
Paperboy
Gauntlet
Road Blasters
Crystal Castles
Marble Madness
Millipede
Again this had pretty much all my fav arcade games and was in heaven.
And going back to the early days, this one had 3 of my utter fav games, happy days
Giants (1988) (U.S Gold) C64
720 Degrees
California Games
Gauntlet 2
Out Run
Rolling Thunder
Platinum (US Gold) AMIGA
Strider
Forgotton Worlds
LED Storm (bonus game)

Nice feature in Crash about compilations here:

It is interesting to note even certain compilations were better for some machines than others, take the 'History in the Making' set, outrageous price at the time for a Spectrum owner, as a lot of the games on that format were quite poor, or less good than the C64 versions, whose owner's I suspect would be far more happy.

Re: Classic compilations
and no-one mentions the multicarts for the megadrive
games like golden axe were classic, in fact i'm going to mention the mega drive collection for the ps2, pretty sure it has 3 golden axe games and a couple of phantasy star as well, pick it up these days and it will cost about £3

And yep, those Mega Drive multi-cart things were/are fantastic. EVERYONE had Mega Games I, so EVERYONE could play Golden Axe.
These three are my favourites in terms of Mega Drive multi-carts:

Gunstar Heroes and Flicky! And two more games.

Five fantastic two-player games, plus Super Hang-On.

Because why not.
This was a great one I got on the PC one birthday, many years ago:

FIFA '98, Die Hard Trilogy, Need For Speed III, and Trespasser, all fun for different reasons. Could never get Future Cop to work and wasn't bothered about Tiger Woods at all, but still... The way it was presented as washing up powder was fun.
My comics blog (mostly lesser-known UK stuff from the 80s and 90s)

Taito Coin-Op Hits was fantastic value for money. I remember searching for it everywhere in my city, it got sold out immediately.

but mega games one was super hang on, world cup italia 90 and columns, iirc golden axe was on mega games 2 and a couple of later ones including the 6 game carts bundled in the later days of the mega drive 2
apparently one of the 6 game carts is going for £150 through retro dealers, no idea how the ---- that is justified

Re: Classic compilations
The Spectrum Magnificent 7 was always a great one and Ocean's they sold a million. Which was the one with Arkanoid, Short Circuit and Frankie GTH for the 64 on? My mate got that one for Chrismas. I spent most of my time on his 64 playing doubles so his games were effectively what I spent most of my time playing.
Solid Gold for the Speccy was ok which had Ace Of Aces, winter (or Summer) games amongs other games. I remember going into Boots after college and after a killer 40 minute bus journey to get that. There was another one which had Batty and Into the Eagles Nest which was great and 2 other games which escape me. IK+ perhaps and some other. The 64 though had the best games though (not always) it was a better machine if truth be known for 2 player simultaneous games but that was just my experience.
Capcom Generations for PS was great. Some PSP compiltations are good such as the SNK Zero 1 and Taito Legends but there is rarely a killer compilation on any format without the developer putting complete dross on the disc so that they can sell a volume 2 or 3 or 4 etc.

Re: Best compilations
That is only if it is fully complete with box and instructions the cart itself is pretty common, it was a pack in with console game, so most did not come with box etc. I think that price was some of the more extreme it has gone for, its less than that now and only really sought after by completests going for the full set, fully boxed.flatapex wrote: apparently one of the 6 game carts is going for £150 through retro dealers, no idea how the ---- that is justified

Yes another good one that, 6 Pak Volume 2 by Hit Pak.
The other games were Shockway Rider, Ace, International Karate and Lightforce.

Another excellent one that came with a Mega CD
Sega Classics Arcade Collection, Super Monaco GP, Golden Axe, Streets Of Rage, Columns and Revenge of Shinobi.
