Mainly because of the fact that Tetris, the archetypal one, isn't a Puzzle by some definitions. Just go with the "normal" classification. That definitely includes Lemmings, but does definitely not include stuff like Lost Vikings, Braid or Limbo.

One of my favorites has always been Mario & Yoshi on the NES. Catchy music and frantic gameplay, what else could you ask for in an action puzzle game?
It's a tricky one to be sure. Luckily I'm not writing it. Maybe we'll do Lemmings and say it spawned the likes of lost Vikings, humans etc.

There really isn't any relation between Lost Vikings and Lemmings though ;)

Lemmings is definitely a puzzler, and so is tetris for that matter.

Other things to be considered are Minesweeper, world of goo, angry birds, cut the rope, peggle.

Not sure about Angry Birds... is Worms a puzzler?

At some point here we seem to switch over to Strategy, which would include games like Sim City... and personally I'd say Angry Birds too. But that's just my opinion...

Tetris a puzzle game? what was I thinking, it's clearly an FPS action RTS JRPG game

edit:

Also if you aren't going to have Tetris you sure can't have Puzzle Bobble etc

We can all admit that if it wasn't for Tetris we would all NOT be able to pack loads of things in small spaces

SUPER PUZZLE PLATFORMER DELUXE!

I'm not a huge puzzle game fan but I enjoyed Klax, Lumines, Lemmings and perhaps Tetris.

Shhhh, you'll make the Rev. Stu Campbell angry!

In recent times, I've really taken to Picross as my puzzler of choice, the sheer amount of time I've put into it (especially Picross 3D on the DS) is pretty worrying.
Sig pic temporarily removed...The Magnificent 7 will ride again 8)

Not retro but candy crush saga has to be mentioned

Probably no puzzle game since Tetris has had more mainstream impact

It seems everyone is playing it!!
