Reader poll: Best SNES games?

Post by Lukemon » Thu Jun 20, 2013 9:00 am

Greetings folks,

I'm putting together a feature for Retro Gamer to try and find the greatest SNES game of all time as voted by you, so any and all input is welcome. It's pretty much the same format as the Mega Drive one Darran ran recently – we're looking for your top ten in order of preference (votes will be weighted according to list position) and by all means let us know why particular games made it into your top ten as well. Always interesting to hear why people adore certain games, plus any really good quotes will likely find their way into the feature as well.

Looking forward to seeing your lists!

Don't forget to add your thoughts to they can be included in the mag :)

Super Mario World - 10
Street Fighter 2 Turbo - 9
Zelda 3: Link to the past - 8
Zombies ate my neighbours - 7
Axelay - 6
Starfox - 5
Super Castlevania IV - 4
Pilotwings - 3
Super Star Wars - 2
UN Squadron - 1

Thats Super Mario World being the best, and UN squadron the 10th best. Somehow I've managed to not include Super Mario Kart or Metroid or Contra 3 despite those all being ace. Just spoilt for choice. Best console ever.

Well, that's a tough one, but I tried not to over think it, and plucked out ten games I still really enjoy now

10.Contra 3 - Absolutely stonking side scrolling shooter, the game that my staunchly MD owning mate bought a SNES for.
9.Castlevania IV - after the rather mundane first couple of levels, it becomes a monster of a platform game, uses every SNES trick in the book, and that music is just wonderful from start to finish.
8.F-Zero - My first experience of the SNES in an import shop, absolutely breathtaking game at the time, had to wait 15 long agonising months for Nintendo to come to Europe before I owned it myself.
7.Super Mario Kart Initially did not grab me that much, then a mate came round and we played it for 8 hours straight.
6.Actraiser - A brilliant mix of God game and platfrom action, with superb graphics and some of the best SNES sound yet heard.
5.Pilotwings - A wonderfully serene atmosphere hides a game that can be brutally difficult late on, but utterly unforgettable, bringing a biplane in for a perfect landing the first time was special.
4.Top Gear - Really just the SNES answer to the Lotus games, but hugely fast and exciting, good varying localities, and immense with two players.
3.Super Tennis - Took years for a better Tennis game to come around, has the Nintendo charm in abundance, another two player masterpiece to boot.
2.UN Squadron - Hard as nails coin op conversion, suffers a bit of slowdown, but ridiculously exciting shooter, the music is rubbish, but everything else is so right.
1.Super Mario World - The first Mario game I played on a home console, just simply one of the most hard games to put down, charming, inventive, and in this Yoshi has to be one of the best sidekicks ever.

Unfortunately leaving no room for, Umihawa Kawase, Yoshi's Island, Mystical Ninja, Starwing, Macross Scrambled Valkyrie, Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country, Alien 3, Mario All Stars, Super Aleste, Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, Axlelay, Batman Returns, Exhaust heat 2, Cybernator, all of which could be on there.

Hmm, this is a tough one. goes (in reverse order, with 1 being the best)

10. Unirally - Probably the best multi-player game on the system, and I genuinely feel it's aged better than Mario Kart. (1 point)

9. Super Metroid - Creepy, unnerving, exciting...still plays brilliantly to this very day. (2 points)

8. A Link to the Past - As much as I enjoy this game, am I the only person who prefers Link's Awakening?? (3 points)

7. Kirby Super Star - Best Kirby game ever. An absolute blast to play.(4 points)

6. Sim City - I could spend hours playing this when I was younger just building up my city (then unleashing Bowser)...then rebuilding it (and unleashing a tornado)...then rebuilding it, and...(you get the gist) (5 points)

5. Super Mario RPG - Not quite as good as the Paper Mario series in my opinion, but it's a game that's aged very well and is one of the best looking titles on the SNES. (6 points)

4. Donkey Kong Country 2 - I'm going to put it out there...this game has the best music out of any SNES game. The soundtrack is just fantastic. (7 points)

3. Chrono Trigger - A great RPG that never quite reaches the level of Final Fantasy III (VI)...but heck, how many RPGs do?? (8 points)

2. Final Fantasy III (VI) - Easily the best RPG on the console, and arguably the best game - I struggled to decide whether or not to put this in my number one spot. (9 points)

1. Super Mario World - I really struggled to decide what to put top of my list, but I can't deny how much I love this game. I can replay it without it ever feeling like a chore. It's just great fun, simple as. As close to perfect as a platformer could ever hope to be. (10 points)
