USA Arcade videos (inc Funspot, Barcade and more)

Post by witchfinder » Mon Jun 10, 2013 5:33 am

Thought I'd start a thread for all the arcade videos I took whilst in the USA recently.

First up is coverage of the 15th Annual Funspot Classic Gaming Tournament. It's quite long but hopefully not boring!

....you found arcades?

In the US?

Where the machines actually function properly and arent all gun and "skill" games?

....how exactly did you perform this amazing feat?

I've never quite been able to manage it myself except very, very rarely, and the ones I find dont often have much in the way of obscure (and thus more interesting) machines. And certainly not the large numbers see in the vid.

Very cool video.

I live south of Chicago. On the boundary between civilization (or what passes for civilization in such a rural area as mine) and endless, endless grass. The majority of the state is just bloody grass, and it starts about half a mile from my location, and everything south or west of that point is just grass with farms sprinkled on. Can drive for hours, and see just grass. Sometimes there's even a cow, it's very exciting.

Bafflingly there's still a number of arcades within reach, but most of them.... yeah. THAT sort of arcade. With the run-down machines and "skill" games and stuff like that. I've known of 3 retro-arcades, but one of them required I travel north into Wisconsin (and that one shut down recently, sadly.... it was a nice place), and one of them is sorta on the fence and might end up going down as well (and is far enough from here that it's hard to get to anyway). A damn shame when that happens; hate to see such places go down at all.

You know about this place I assume? Second largest classic arcade in the USA as far as I'm aware...

Actually I'd totally forgotten about that one until you mentioned it, so thanks for that....

Hadnt looked into that one overmuch before due to it's rather.... irritating location, which is a bit problematic from where I'm at. Well, not so much the location as the roads necessary to get there.

....except now I actually had a look at the game list and see things like Daioujou, Sinistar, Star Castle, Gorf, Krull, both freaking Tron machines, and argh argh argh, I"m going to end up making that godforsaken drive within the next week now, arent I. There's even a Crazy Climber machine.

Gah.

Well, allright, if I end up doing that within the next few days as I'm now suddenly planning, I'll see if I cant get some photos of it and some of the machines.

Next video is online now...

This is part 1 of my journey around the arcades of the Eastern USA, including Barcade in Philadelphia, Game Galaxy in Antioch Tennessee and Barcade in New York!

Part 2 is almost done and is exclusively about New Hampshire... :D

I really enjoyed these vids thanks for posting them up. I would die for some of those cabs! Does China Town in New York still have an arcade? There was a big fighting game scene there.

On a side note, you'd forget this is a retro game forum, we have 3 massively popular threads about next gen consoles but when someone posts up some good footage of old skool arcades and tournaments it gets 81 views

Haha, probably not the right time to post while E3 is happening, but there you go... ;)

For those of you that are enjoying the vids, here's part 2 of the USA tour.

No idea why but at the moment it doesn't have a thumbnail - YouTube weirdness! :?

Enjoyable videos, those - Night Driver looks fantastic!

What's the name of the game around the 10-minute mark? With the 3D-ish scrolling background? Wouldn't mind giving that one a go.

Night Driver was really great, one of my faves in the tournament. Murder on the 'standing leg' though if you have a long game!

The game you were interested in is Exerion. First game I played when I got there this year, and I scored 66k which I never got close to again - beginner's luck!

A game that gives physical pain - great :D

Need to get one of those for Replay! Just getting Exerion now for MAME, see how it goes...

RIGHT!

First go score, 1300
Didn't realise there was limited ammo!

Second go score - 5300, bloody hard game that! Looks nice though.

EDIT:
Six goes later, 45,900 - more like it :D

Hi Mat,

Watched the vids. Really fun and looks like you had a great time on Holiday. Did you guys do anything other than play games? (and get engaged)
I remember in Manchester at the Lass, you playing Tapper all the time on the Bartop. Is it your fave classic arcade game now then?

Funspot looks massive, but only 100 entrants into the competition seems fairly low. The Barcades look ace though, a shame we don't have anything similar in the UK (or Berlin in my case). How does it work with drinks? Are people allowed to place beers on top of the cabs?

I spotted Warlords in one of the vids, but did any of the places have a sitdown cocktail version?

Ta,
Pete
