Don't be afraid! As much as Capcom p!ss us all off, you gotta say their fighting games are several classes above anything else out there. Nice to see some love for SSF4 too. Maybe its not the 'hardcore' or 'technical' choice, buts its the most fun, and thats what matters, right?

Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower - 3 Points
Tekken 2 - 2 Points
Capcom Vs SNK 2 - 1 Point

That was extremely hard for me to narrow down with many, many more than could have easily filled the third spot.
Retro is a state of mind, and cares not for your puny concepts like dates and calendars.

Yeah I know what you mean but I thought that I'd try to be as inclusive as possible by limiting it to a top three because not everybody is into fighting games like myself. I thought some people might struggle to name five they liked. Plus it means less adding up for me to do!

I was very tempted to go with powerstone for the fun I had in multiplayer. I keep buying beat em ups but never get any better at them, I've lost interest in the genre now.
I'm into the genre, but like you I never get any better at them now. I tend to buy many but never really master one of them. It was so much better in the 90's when you could walk into the arcade & challenge people to a game. Online just doesn't do it for me.

I was going to put Tekken 2 into my three instead of Tekken Tag Tournament but I just found TTT to be too much fun. The insane variation in combo possibilites means it just pipped Tekken 2. Strangely I wasn't that fond of Tekken 3 as they removed some of my fave characters. The characters in T2 are just fantastic - mucho love was given to Jun, Baek, King, Lee Chaolan, Lei and Nina. Kazuya was the don back then too.

A good spread of votes so far with a couple of notable omissions to date. Keep your nominations coming in to those who have yet to commit :)

1 - Street Fighter Alpha 3
2 - Soul Calibur
3 - Powerstone 2
The square is a great shape, and one that is criminally underused in modern game design. In the push to ever more granular, chaotic environments, games have lost sight of the simple pleasures of right angles and straight lines.
