Best version of Cannon Fodder and Syndicate?

Post by JaguarWong » Tue May 21, 2013 8:12 am

I've been rebuilding my games collection - replacing ones I've lost, traded or sold in the impetuousness of a long forgotten youth - and I've come to Syndicate and Cannon Fodder.

Back in the day I had, and loved, the SNES versions. So, considering my Amiga 600 is still pending repair, these versions would be favourite out of the blocks.

But I could also get them for Megadrive or Jaguar.

Does anyone know if these two versions have any fundamental advantages over the SNES ones?

Cheers in advance.

Cannon Fodder was an Amiga game originally and I'd say that's the definitive version.

Syndicate is at its best on the PC. It's a bit tricky to configure the original boxed version to play on a modern computer though, so you'd probably better off going with the download from Good Old Games, who've got it ready configured.

I don't rate the console ports of either that highly; both games are designed around mouse controls and it seems an awful faff to play them with a joypad, although you might think differently if you grew up with them that way.

Yeah, I think because I've only ever played both games with a D-pad that's not really an issue - although it's fairly obvious that mouse control would be an improvement.

I think even if I fix the Amiga and get it for that I'd still pine for a cartridge version - such are the mysteries of nostalgia!

Which version of cannon fodder had singing at the start
"war never been so much fun"
Was it on the stock Amiga one, or the CD32 version? Thats the best version, as there was very little to pick between any version, a nice gimmick of sampled sound edges it!

Jaguar IMO.

It has an "enhanced" version version of Syndicate and Cannon Fodder is pretty much identical to the 3DO and CD32 versions.

CD32 imo, identical to Amiga version but with no disk swapping and can use a mouse for much better control, and with the FMV intro and music.
Syndicate was good on the Amiga/CD32 but the PC had 256 colour high res version so that wins imo.

While the Jag had decent ports, I really think the original Amiga versions are still the best to play.

I would say Amiga for both games, the graphics on the PC version of Cannon Fodder look sub-par to the Amiga version to me.

While I know I'm in the minority, I'm rather partial to the SNES version of both. I never played other versions of Cannon Fodder so I cant really comment but I had Syndicate on the PC and found it very difficult (it was the one with American Revolt) and rather gloomy. I preferred getting out the 4 way joy pad tap and with my mates work through each and every mission as a team. I even quite like the day glo Lego style graphics even though they went against the grain of the storyline. Syndicate Wars is a different story though. PC all the way as the PlayStation version is just horrible.

Syndicate on the Snes is an abomination. It's Amiga all the way for both of these.

Yeah, I have to agree. Amiga for both games. The SNES and MD versions were a disaster to even try and play.
