Greatest Mega Drive games of all time

Post by Darran@Retro Gamer » Mon May 20, 2013 10:31 am

Hooray, it's time for another list.
Simply tell us your ten favourite Mega Drive games with a score of 10 for your favourite to 1 for your least favourite. We'll do the rest and make sure Strider gets the top spot.

My top ten would be

Strider 10
Thunder Force III 9
Gunstar Heroes 8
Devil Crash 7
Streets Of Rage 2 6
Castle Of Illusion 5
Revenge Of Shinobi 4
Contra Hard Corps 3
Gley Lancer 2
Story Of Thor 1

I couldn't give you one 10 rated game for the Megadrive. True Story.

Sonic? A solid 8 maybe. Goldenaxe? 7 at best. The rest? varying levels of less good. (IMO)

It's more your top 10 favourite mega drive games that you rate in order from 10 to 1 as opposed to the Mega Drive games you feel deserved a ten. Basically the same sort of thing we just did with Capcom.

This really was an insanely hard list to compile after the first 2 games, just so many amazing MD games.

10. Streets Of Rage 2
9. Toe Jam & Earl
8. Gain Ground
7. Dragon's Fury
6. Ultimate Qix
5. Mercs
4. Speedball 2
3. Side Pocket
2. Streets Of Rage
1. Sensible Soccer

Streets Of Rage 2 is possibly the best game ever made, would have given it 20 points if I could

I will actually try and think of 10 I played and at least enjoyed:

1. Sonic
2. Goldenaxe
3. Road Rash
4. Wonderboy in monster world
5. Gods
6. The game with the different power hats? looked like magic pockets but wasn't
7. Castle of Illusion
8. Splatterhouse 3
9. Wrestlewar (not nearly as good as the cover would suggest)
10. Some sort of Golf gubbins Arnold Palmer maybe or PGA (you really should do a feature on just what the hell makes golf games so playable)

That would be Kid Chameleon. It was ace, but too bloody hard.

10 - Thunderforce IV - This game just owned me as a kid
9 - Jungle Strike - Really enjoyed this, really bettered what they did in Desert Strike
8 - Mortal Kombat II - the best version of this era
7 - Rocket Knight Adventures - Vibrant colours, clever level design, just superb
6 - Road Rash II - Added multiplayer, scaled like a Mode 7 SNES game! Shame about the music
5 - Street Fighter II CE - An amazing conversion of the arcade classic, so many options!
4 - Revenge of the Shinobi - An early display of the 16 bit power house
3 - Streets of Rage 2 - Amazingly smooth gameplay and combo system - music to die for!
2 - Sonic 2 - Again this refined the formula set out in the first game, the best sonic game in the series
1 - Robocop VS Terminator - One of my all time favourite platformers, so much action so much style and so much blood. Hard as censored too!

Stop putting SFII on your lists, it sucked on the MD, it really did.
