8 Bit Driving Games

Post by JaguarWong » Fri May 17, 2013 4:23 am

I checked the 'catch-all' thread and didn't see this mentioned before.

I got Stunt Car Racer (C64) in the post yesterday and have, after a few hours re-familiarising myself with it (I had the Speccy version back-in-the-day) I've decided it's my favourite 8 Bit racer.

Chase H.Q. on ZX runs it close and Micro machines was great across various 8 Bit formats but SCR is the daddy as far as I'm concerned.

Turbo Esprit would defeat all but it's more of an 'open world' game to me...

^ Some great games there, I love Master System racing games - a decent version of OutRun and Hang On but the MS version of Road Rash is unbelievable

Any decent version of Outrun is always worth a look.

My collection is painfully low on 8 bit consoles so a Master System is fighting it out with an NES to be next on the list - and currently winning as it would mean I'll then have all four of Sega's mainstream consoles.

It's also cheaper. /tightarse

WEC Le Mans was very very good on the Speccy as was Enduro Racer.

Never enjoyed Stunt Car Racer on either the Speccy or C64, i was 'brought up' with the Amiga version which blew me away (yeah i know its not 8 bit but still an amazing game).

Not really, just thought they're may have been a Peter Wright tie-in game I'd missed out on.

If I manage to fix the 600 I picked up recently SCR is high on my list of games to get for it. Maybe even top.

I'd have to say that most 8 bit driving games were pony tbh. Exceptions for me were Hang on (Master System), Enduro Racer (Spectrum) & Super Hang On (Spectrum). After typing this post, I've realised that they're all motorbike racers! Gazooks...

Chequered Flag, TT Racer and Revs for me. They were the sim racers of their day.

Oh, and Turbo Esprit; The GTA 3 of the 80s. ;)

I liked WEC Le Mans, but apart from the lovely graphics, I got bored with it after a while.

Enduro Racer on the other hand - this game was just amazing. Played it a lot. Quality fun.
