Racing game for a 6 year old?

Post by mmace » Tue Apr 30, 2013 7:18 am

I've seen the sticky about recommendations, but that doesn't answer my problem.
Can anyone recommend a racing game suitable for a 6 year old?
I need one where it's hard to go off the track and without checkpoints and I can't seem to find one

preferably on Amiga, SNES, Mega Drive, PSX or MAME but open to any others
He loves NASCAR type games, I've got NASCAR 2004 on PSX but he cannot stay on the track on corners when going the speeds he needs to when staying with the "pack" in front

thanks

That’s a difficult one, as most out-and-out racers are all about staying on the tracks. Maybe you should take a look at the more ‘battle’ orientated racers.
I can think of scars for the PS1 or maybe Wacky Races, Toy Racer or Speed Devils for the Dreamcast. There not all brilliant games for an adult, although I think scars is very much underrated, but it may be worth checking them out in an emulator.

Or maybe the Crazy Taxi games, although that may not be exactly what you are looking for.
And there's always Mario Cart...

Wipeout series

If that doesn't teach a child cognitive and cerebral skills, then nothing will

Unless of course you want a fun easy racer, in which case, Mario Kart or Sonic Racing would suffice :)

cheers guys, I will look into Sonic, we use Android (that's what the emulators run on with PS3 controllers) but I cannot see that as an Android app.
We've tried SNES version of Mario Kart but even I find it hard to stay on the track.
I forgot all about Wipeout!
I will look in to scars and the dreamcast ones, thank you again

You could try one of the Lotus Turbo Challenge games on the Amiga or Megadrive. It's impossible to crash or go off the track with them; you're just forced to slow down when you drive on the verge.

Micro Machines is perfect for this. If you stray too far from the track, it puts you right back on.

My nephew used to play it when he was roughly 6 or 7, and he'd forever be careering off into plugholes and off the side of snooker tables. Unlike serious racing games where you get stuck in a gravel trap or against a barrier, it accompanies such things with "weeeeeeeeeee-splat"-style sound effects, to the point where kids actually enjoy doing such things deliberately.

And when they've cracked doing it deliberately, it gives them the skills to also play the game properly.

You could try destruction Derby or Driver for the PS1. In destruction derby you don't neceseraly need to follow a 'road' as such, and in driver you are surounded in buildings so can't go way of 'track.'

They may need help getting off the tutorial in Driver though

The 3D Mario Karts like 64 onwards are easier to control then the SNES and GBA ones. One game that sprung to mind when I saw this topic was Diddy Kong Racing.

Just to elaborate on that, there was no coming off the track because it was in 2D. Asimple game to play, but it took a lot of skill to get good at.

Mario Kart Wii?

My 4 year old is great at it and the wheel makes for easy control. She has won all cups on 50cc so far.
