Remember renting video games from the video shop?

Post by Combo-Breaker » Fri Apr 12, 2013 6:54 am

I miss those days. And I miss going in and seeing a new game that had been an arcade bit and thinking "Yes! Perfect timing".

What was your local called? Mine was called "Top Ten Video" which is still around. I remember bugging THE LIFE out of them for MK II, years ago. I got it and couldn't stop playing it, :)

'Remember renting video games from the video shop?'

Nope. I've never rented a videogame from a 'video shop' or any other source.

^This.

I've never rented a game. The closest I've come to that would be downloading free games on the PS3, which will vanish if I stop my PS+ sub.

Ditto. I've rented a few dodgy videos in the past, but that's another story for another thread!

I rented tons of games when I was younger.

First off, it was Xtra Vision, that has NES/SNES/MD carts that were housed in clear vhs boxes along with their manuals.

Then it was Variety Video, for the PS1/Saturn/N64 days

I stopped there as it then became a little too expensive to rent games for the following generations. £3.95 for 1 night? Who the hell is going to complete a 10-15 hour game in one night lol

We had an independent video shop in my town that was ace. He even used to have import games and import adapters. I rented loads of Mega Drive games from there but in the end he closed down a little while after a Blockbusters opened over the road, they were no where near as good.

Copying rented disks as a child is probably the only time where I've broke the law without guilt.

Ahaha. I used to do that when I was getting into anime back in the early 90s. Anime was really expensive those days and since I was just a damned kid with a paper route, there was no way I was gonna pay that kind of cash for each 30 or 45 minute VHS tape.

Anyway, I live in Canada so the default rental store was Rogers. I bought a bunch of games from Rogers when they were getting rid of their SNES games in the late 90s too. Earthbound comes to mind. Castlevania IV. Skyblazers. All from Rogers.

I think the only time I remember renting a game was when we needed a second copy of Doom and Ridge Racer Revolution for multiplayer link up on PS1. We'd have gone for Wipeout2097 but they didn't have it.

This is going further back than anyone, but renting the odd 2600 game from the local store. This is also the place that still had Betamax in stock until about 1987 for rent/buy too.
