Ahem.

Anyhoo, moving swiftly on...I have found myself playing an awful lot of Mirrors Edge lately. I couldn't get into it before but now I am really enjoying it.

I realised that right after I posted the comment. And I hoped I'd get to edit the word to "game" before anyone reading it. Murphy's Law I guess.

I'm playing Breath of Fire--Dragon Quarter right now. A lot of people say JRPGs got stale in the PS2 era but I dunno. I've been playing Radiata Stories (actually finished it, or at least finished one of two paths in it) and Dragon Quarter as part of my "let's play unpopular JRPGs" quest and I noticed that a lot of unpopular RPGs were simply different rather than bad. So if being different doesn't sell, and the whiners didn't buy it, then the whiners really aren't in a position to argue about staleness since there were several quite "different" JRPGs and they simply weren't very popular saleswise or cultwise. I'm not saying these are perfect games or that people have to like them but at times they did take drastic and arguably bold left turns away from the traditional JRPG staleness, which is the main argument some critics level against the genre.

I've also been periodically working on Gradius V.

Tried out a few more PS2 games last night as part of the ongoing effort to weed out the trash and slim my collection down. First up was Street Racing Syndicate which wasn't necessarily bad just not exciting in the slightest. Even at 100mph, it felt like I wasn't going anywhere. There wasn't any feeling to the cars either unlike Namco's other PS2 car racer/modder The Fast and the Furious which I really enjoyed. Shame really as SRS looked very similar from the back of the box.

Then I played some of The Getaway. I owned this game before and got rid of it but after picking up a nice condition copy with the map for a few quid a while ago, I thought I'd give it another chance. Nope, still hate it. The cover system is a nice idea but the game feels like a horrible trial-and-error experience where continually dying to learn where the enemies will emerge from is the best way to progress. Hate the controls and the main character runs really slow and awkwardly as if he's recently had a back door evacuation. Also irritating is the fact that the free-roaming mode is only available on completion of the game  .

Finally, some 1945 1&2: The Arcade Games. This one's quite good even though I'm not too good at it. Masses of bullets to dodge and explosions everywhere. It's a strange package though. Why is the word 'Strikers' omitted from the title on the box? Why does the plane select screen use Microsoft Office 'wordart' for the plane names? . Very cheap and nasty presentation (no 60Hz either) but a decent set of shmups in any case.

Dead or Alive Dimensions on 3DS. Really impressed with the story mode on this one and how it seamlessly moves through the storylines of all previous games with nice cutscenes etc. Love the fact boxouts on the bottom screen too that give info about the older games, characters etc. as they appear in the story mode. Just a nice touch even though I already know a lot of it.

As for the gameplay, it's great but I need to spend some time in practice mode as I'm finding it easy to hammer opponents with the same combos. Functional but not satisfying :) . The music is ace too.

So yeah, a good start to the 3DS experience for me :)

I've got the kids for the next 5 days and as of 7pm tonight my gaming has consisted of Smurfs Dance Party on the Wii and Tigger's Honey Hunt on PS1... Tigger's Honey Hunt isn't actually that bad

Hot Shots/Everybody's Tennis on the PSP. Tennis games are simply immense.

Working through Icewind Dale co-op with my brother (getting the games connected the first time was quite an ordeal), and too many Mario games to list.

Tried out Xmen Vs Streetfighter on the PS1 last night. It's sluggish alright but I expected that. Playable enough until I get hold of the Saturn version.

But Apocalypse...damn. His attacks don't make him the worst Vs boss I've seen but his lifebar takes sooooo long to deplete. I actually couldn't beat him even as my best character, Akuma. I'll do it eventually though.

Currently playing Bayonetta.

Well, I say playing it, but I had to sit there watching a 45 minute ultra-cheesy-japanese Intro movie first. I'm honestly surprised a gun didn't pop out of her vadge too. Anyone who's seen the 15 hour intro movie will know what I'm taking about.

Japanese gun porn. You just can't beat it. Probably because you're too busy beating off.
