This is a great question and it's a real bugger to answer. Can we perhaps choose a decade of time (a 10 year period) or is that not allowed?

My heart says the eighties as I loved owning all the 8 bit computers especially the ZX Spectrum, then you can add various cartridge based machines plus you could import a Megadrive. I loved gaming in the eighties, however saying all that my head says it has to be the nineties as it was simply unsurpassed with it's shear volume of quality games available on quality machines.

Well that's not bloody fair.

Okay then the 80s. I don't think it's the better genre, but it has Robotron and Strider in it, two games that defined my youth more than any other.

The 90's easily.

16 bit awesome. Neo Geo, PC Engine.

32 bit brilliance. Saturn, PS1 and N32x2.

You can even fit the Dreamcast in there. Although I suppose the MD and PC Engine might have to go if we are being pedantic.

We had great arcade games, great Japanese and Westernn RPGs. The first of the FPS. ISS Pro and 64. Super Mario World, Sonic, Tekken, VF, Ridge, Rally, Daytona.

Wipeout.

The 90's. God bless that beautiful decade.

90's by a huge margin. The golden age of videogames. the best of 2d and the most memorable and impacting of 3d.
The square is a great shape, and one that is criminally underused in modern game design. In the push to ever more granular, chaotic environments, games have lost sight of the simple pleasures of right angles and straight lines.

Agreed.

If we'd have been allowed to chose a ten year period I'd have gone for 1979-1988 partly because of arcade coin-ops that the OP made no mention of.

If forced to choose a past decade purely for retro gaming then it'd obviously be the 1980s.

oh go on
my question mostly revolves around games
most the pc engine and megadrive games were from the 90's
the megadrive peaked in the 90's
so it counts for the 90's

conversely the dreamcast also counts but only games released for it in 98 and 99

thats because i am not an arcade gamer
i have been inside an arcade exactly twice in my whole life

any and all arcade games i played were home conversions

That'll be because you missed when arcades were good,in the best decade, the 80s.
