a decade only

Post by snowkatt » Tue Mar 26, 2013 12:41 am

if you could play games from one decade only for the rest of your life
what decade woudl that be ?
the systems dont matter much just the decade

the 1970's : the start of vidoe gaming the rise of atari dedicated pong consoles
the vcs the odyssy 2 space invaders and so on

the 1980's the rise and fall of atari the rise of nintendo
the nes the master system the pc engine the megadrive the emergence of sega
the emergence of new genres and new and orginal ideas

the 1990's 16 bit 32 bit 64 bit
old generes are moulded in to familair shapes
cd games multimedia the emergence of 3d games and even more and varied orginal ideas to see what sticks
the snes megadrive 32x playstation 1 saturn dreamcast and so on

the 2000's the demise of sega the rise of the ps 2 the xbox the emergence of online gaming and dlc
the ps 3 and the xbox 360
waggeling your wii mote

or current gaming

for me its a no brainer
the 1990's
1990 to 1999
the 1990's hold some of the best games ever
the most variety
with comapnies having a see what sticks aproach some times this failed miserably and some times it worked beautifully

the 1990's had
the snes
the megadrive
the 3do
the neo geo
the jaguar
the 32x
the mega cd
the virtual boy ( okay maybe not that one )
the saturn
and off course the playstation

i could happily play games only from the 90's

and your decade is ?

Yeah, 90's is a no-brainer. Miss the first year of mega drive, but get the first year of dreamcast

80s all the way for me. Its that era I tend to go back to most. It has everything I need, from quick shmups to sprawling adventures. The other eras have their highlights, but I could live without them.

Is it cheating to say current gaming because of the re-release of classic titles and emulation?

Because I don't care if it is, modern gaming for me (with emulators and all that)

Its with heavy heart id say modern. I had loads and loads of the retro games when they were new and i cant help wondering how many i only still love now- becuase it brings back great memories. When i vist an "old" game for the first time, if it provides me with no link to the past its alarming how little time i give it. Most modern games i will sit there and play for hours-on the first few plays.
Im am truly a retro gamer but, i would say 90% is based on what i have been playing since they were new. I am very narrow minded to trying 80s/90s stuff now that i have no previous game time with.
My iggnorance ,my loss i guess. :(

The 80s by a mile - the only decade where games were mainly done by individuals or duos rather than teams, and were far better for it :)

The 1990's.

Most of my favourite systems were still being produced in that decade... I can play anything from my Amstrad CPC right through to my Dreamcast! :D

You cam only play 90s games on your CPC, so there'll be about two of them.

Things are limited to your decade, not your decade + everything that came before, else we'd all just go for current decade to get all the games.

I don't now that emulation is much use if you choose a recent decade, since you can only play that decade's homebrew and not the earlier games.

I take your point, but I'll still stick with the 90's - SNES, Megadrive, Amiga, Playstation... plenty to enjoy.

Also, there was over 100 Amstrad games released in the 1990s...

Current gaming, the games we have now sh1t all over everything else, its not even close.

Skyrim, Mass Effect trilogy, Fallout 3, Football Manager 2013, Borderlands 2, X-Com, Dishonored, Spelunky, Geometry Wars 2, Pinball FX 2, COD online, Battlefield online, Sleeping Dogs, Uncharted, SSF4, Virtua Fighter 5, and that's not even scratching the surface.

We have all the fantastic updates and reboots of classic games, loads of great stuff on IOS/Androids, XBLA, lots of great family games on the Wii/Wii U and all the big hitters on 360/PS3/PC.

Right now is a supreme time to be a gamer, only thing missing is the arcades!!

I don't think the current decade is doing too badly so far, but why pick it when it's only just into its fourth year when you could have the full ten for the others? Also, counting re-makes isn't exactly getting into the spirit of the idea.

I'd probably go for the 80s. Just because it was an exciting time where original ideas were the norm and we were just crossing over from the realm of the bedroom coder into professionalism.

it isnt but it does go against the spirit of the question
your supposed to stick with the releases of the decade of your choice
not the decade of your choice and all releases of the previous decace ( s )

since my choice is the 90's i would only be able to play games from 1991 till 1990
only dreamcast games released in 1998 and 1999
hey wait ! i got a new complaint !
