Super Metroid - Snes, no contest.

If you're after something a bit more pure platformer, then Plok or Dynamite Heddy or maybe Castle of Illusion.

World of Illusion. First game I owned on my MegaDrive, and still stunning to look at.

Super Mario World. Varied levels, great power ups and a huge game did it for me. The method of opening secret levels was genius too...not only did you have to find the exit you also needed the key and had to bring the key to the keyhole. Just amazing.

It's also infinately expandable using Lunar Magic Editor. Make your own SMW or play other peoples.

Easy - Super Mario World. Probably the best 2d platformer ever, and I personally think Mario has never been better.

I'm sure this won't be top of anyone's list but I loved Hawkeye on the Atari ST!

My favourite was Shadow of the beast on the Amiga. This game graphics was just excellent, the 12 levels of parallax scrolling backgrounds and the very atmospheric soundtrack made this game very enjoyable.

Quoted for truth. I honestly think Super Mario World is perfect.

Thirded. I still remember how amazed I was the first time I saw this at a friends house. Is it better than mario 3 overall though? Thats a tough question...

I'm on the side of SMW for sheer brilliance, but there's no denying the amount of innovation in 3, and without that I don't think SMW would have been as good.
