Fable - Knothole Glade: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vL2u5Xy-38c

FFVII - Those Who Fight Further, the boss music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCXs-Gpld_8
Side note - the Black Mages version of this rocks.

FFIX - Loss of Me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRpGoFISvok

These are all a bit epic, and not hugely retro, but are seriously, seriously good. The one retro tune that springs to mind is from Thunder Force IV (as if I don't go on about it enough), the Strite level boss, it sets the mood of the game perfectly, and just to screw with the rules, here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlmbkKtjfSc

Oh and the Auf Wiedersehen Monty tune is wicked cool.

Top 3? I'd find it hard to pick a top 30. But these are 3 of my favourites...

L.E.D. Storm (ZX Spectrum 128k) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9b9XjxK2RJc
Jet Set Willy (Atari XE/XL) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdh4PO7aT68
Jim Power - Level 5 (Atari ST) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbK34-_TRDU

My three favourites:

Edge of Soul - opening theme from Soul Edge / Soul Blade by KHAN:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l90bz08OVHA

Main Theme / First stage MOOT - by Hiroshi Kawaguchi for Space Harrier
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QB-mC2m5434

Fun and Mini-Games - by Christophe Héral for Beyond Good & Evil:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96uvgopVw-M

But there are other great tunes around so here's another three:

As catchy as Bubble Bobble is the theme from Nitrome's Skywire:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnMujHF10Fk

Akuda House Propaganda - by Christophe Héral again for Beyond Good & Evil:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSNs3GJJl4c

And here's a bonus vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3KUyPKbR7Q

No, that's not batsh*t enough to end on. OK, try this:

Gaming tunes have improved massivelt from early days, dunno if my faves would be counted as are quite new...FF7 is brill, I love Silent Hills atmospheric music...many games have music up there and often better than movie soundtracks.

For the vibe of this topic I'd assume we're talking retro, and these are the ones that stick in my head (and can never be removed! ):

Pengo, Moon Patrol, Frogger.

Most annoying music and sound effects by far for me: Moon Cresta!
