Do you play bad games for fun?

Post by GigaPepsiMan » Sat Feb 23, 2013 5:53 am

Anyone here ever play a bad game on purpose because they enjoy it?
For example last night I booted up Minority Report on gamecube and not even a minute in to the game the thought struck me "my god, this is bloody terrible", the game is terrible but it's that kind of terrible where as you are playing it you are getting a laugh at how bad it is.
Anyone else do this?

I keep returning to david robinson's basketball on the megadrive. Its not chronically bad, but its certainly not good. But, for some reason, I quite enjoy it.

Not really - if a game is fun, then it's fun. Minority Report is actually a very fun game.

Something TRULY bad, like maybe Sword Of Sodan on MD - why would I bother with it? Total no-fun zone, ridicule is a vapid form of entertainment, fun is where it's at otherwise it's a total f*cking waste of time. ;)

Oh where to begin lol
I absolutely adore Rise of the Robots on the Megadrive, don't ask me why but I really enjoy playing it lol
Also really like the early King's Field games which most seem to despise as well as those awesome Megadrive games Super Hydlide and Fatal Labyrinth.

On the flip side I tend to hate games which are, for some reason, hugely successful such as the Call of Duty, Gears of War and Assassin's Creed all of which fill me with hatred and sorrow

I'll play any modern game if I enjoy it, no matter what the popular consensus on that game is. It's me who decides whether a game is "bad" or not and nobody else. I don't usually go out of my way to play a game just because it has a bad reputation though.
Some games have low production values or are just an unintentional mess and this can add to the charm sometimes I think. Really dire voice acting and slightly broken gameplay and stuff like that has definitely given a few games a bit of character and quirkiness for me that's sometimes lacking in a slickly produced AAA title.

I don't think there's that many genuinely "bad" modern games out there these days tbh. The design process is well trodden now.

For retro games there's some real stinkers and they're definitely worth a look for laughs but many of them were trying something genuinely different at a time when game design was still fairly new. There's definitely a lot more games from back then that I'd consider a rip-off though. The hype nowadays is bad but back then it was appalling, which can lead to some hilariously bad game experiences. It's alright looking back at them now but I'd have been well peed off at the time I think.
If it's slower than me, dumber than me and it tastes good ... tough titty.

Ive been playing Minority Report recently and it's quite a fun game actually. I also enjoyed Duke Nukem Forever but I often find many so-called bad games enjoyable. Vampire rain, DNF, Too Human, Minority report etc.
